Nominations sought for fire safety award

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is seeking nominations for the 2024 James M. Shannon Advocacy Medal, which recognizes fire and life safety advocates who have made significant contributions to reducing losses from fire, electrical, and other hazards while furthering the NFPA mission.

The award honors an individual or group that shares the values of former NFPA president James Shannon. During his 12-year tenure as president, Shannon was recognized for his exceptional record of advocacy to reduce fire loss, most notably by spearheading the Coalition for Fire-Safe Cigarettes and advocating for fire sprinklers in all new homes.

NFPA considers nominees who are fire service members or any individual or group whose advocacy efforts meet the award's criteria. The medal recipient will be announced and receive the award during the NFPA Conference & Expo in Orlando, Fla., from June 17 to 19. Previous recipients have worked to improve firefighter safety, sought to increase the use of home sprinklers, and advocated for the use of updated codes, among other activities.

The nominee application is available for download at http://www.nfpa.org/About-NFPA/Awards/James-Shannon-Advocacy-Medal. Completed applications may be emailed to publicaffairs@nfpa.org until the submission period closes on Friday, Feb. 9.

Founded in 1896, NFPA is a global, self-funded, nonprofit organization devoted to eliminating death, injury, property and economic loss due to fire, electrical and related hazards. For more information, visit http://www.nfpa.org.
