VisionCorps in need of volunteer drivers

VisionCorps is looking for volunteers to help drive people who are blind and vision-impaired. Volunteer opportunities are available in both Lancaster and Chester counties.

Especially needed are volunteers willing to drive VisionCorps staff members to clients' homes, where they teach them the skills they need to live independently. "They can use their own car or a VisionCorps vehicle," explained Carol Gifford, community relations specialist. "We help them with mileage (reimbursement) if they use their own car."

She noted that two staff members have a regular need for transportation, so VisionCorps is hoping to find additional volunteer drivers. "One of the people who needs transportation is the orientation and mobility specialist. She trains individuals who are blind how to use a white cane and anything they need in terms of mobility," said Gifford. "We also have the access technology specialist who works with our clients who need help accessing any type of technology using a laptop or tablet. He trains them and helps them find out about different apps that are available and shows them how to use them."

Gifford said that volunteer drivers are not only providing an important service, but they are also able to enjoy the company of VisionCorps staff members. "What our volunteers like about participating in a program like this is they get to know the individuals they are driving; it's kind of fun," she said, noting that volunteers can also learn about the services that VisionCorps provides "They can ask them questions about how they cope with low vision and 'How do you teach individuals to get around their house and use public transportation?'"

Gifford noted that volunteers are given choices for different assignments. They can choose to participate when it is convenient for them.

"When we have an assignment, we will reach out and send an email to the volunteers. It will say someone needs transportation on this date and time and ask if they are available," Gifford explained. "You don't have to commit to a regular schedule, although you could. You would be contacted each time, and you can say 'yes' or 'no.'"

Gifford said that while the volunteer opportunity is ideal for retired residents, all drivers are welcome to provide the service. She added that volunteers have been used by the agency for several years.

"We got out of (using volunteer drivers) during COVID, but now there is more need," she stated. "We have about 10 to 15 volunteers, and we can use a lot more."

Drivers interested in volunteering are asked to contact Miranda Golden, social services case manager, at mgolden@visioncorps.net or 717-925-7271.
