Master Gardeners plan programs

The Penn State Extension Master Gardeners in Dauphin County will host a two-part Spring Symposium. The programs will be held at Olewine Nature Center at Wildwood Park, 100 Wildwood Way, Harrisburg, and will also be livestreamed.

The first program will be Climate Smart Gardening on Saturday, Feb. 24, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Master Gardeners Michael Brewer and Steve Tambolas will advise attendees on how to plant gardens that will help to capture carbon, retain and filter rainwater, support biodiversity of plants and animals, and provide floral resources for pollinators in all the seasons they are active.

Gardening for the Senses, Including Taste will be held on Saturday, March 2, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. This program will include a virtual tour of the Five Senses Garden in Harrisburg, and Master Gardener Cindy Hogeman will speak about creating a native garden to feed the senses and support pollinators. Riverbend Foraging's Jonathan Darby will offer information needed to safely forage in a backyard.

Saturday Garden Chats with a Master Gardener will be presented on two Saturdays from 10 to 11 a.m. free of charge by Tambolas.

The March 2 talk, Getting Ready for Spring, will be held in the pavilion at Lamplight Park, 6082 Mayfair Drive, Harrisburg. It will answer the question "What should you prepare in March to have a successful gardening season?"

Plant Selection and Garden Pest Management will be held on April 6 in the pavilion at Brightbill Park, 126 Carolyn St., Harrisburg. Tambolas will discuss issues that may arise in the garden - such as some plants barely blooming - and how to overcome them.
