Heart health suggestions offered

February is American Heart Month, and the Lancaster County Office of Aging has posted tips for keeping one's heart healthy. Heart disease can affect people of any age, gender or ethnicity, and caring for one's heart and cardiovascular function becomes increasingly important as one ages.

Exercise remains one of the best ways to maintain and improve heart health. Before beginning an exercise routine, people should check with their doctor, who can help them develop a plan that fits their physical needs and health goals. Some easy routines include brisk walking, dancing, Zumba, stationary cycling, water aerobics and yoga.

Maintaining healthy cholesterol and blood pressure readings is also important for heart health. People should keep regular appointments with their doctor, who can suggest healthy ways to lower cholesterol or blood pressure if they are too high.

Social isolation can be a risk factor for heart disease. People are encouraged to explore their local community, and seniors may visit a local senior center or sign up for a Lancaster County Office of Aging wellness event.
