Navigating the ever-changing world of technology

Technology can be complex and confusing. That can lead to frustration and a lack of confidence.

But the Manheim Township Public Library (MTPL) is there to help. The local library offers technology support in the form of classes and one-on-one appointments.

"I definitely see people who are frustrated and overwhelmed," said Katy Basile, the adult services manager at MTPL. "What I try to do is reassure people. When you practice and have someone helping you, anyone can do what they're trying to do. Probably a good bit of it is a confidence issue. When I explain to people and we go through it slowly, most people get it. People definitely get the hang of it faster than they think."

MTPL offers monthly morning and evening computer classes, and that service is supported by personal mentoring sessions. Participants are encouraged to bring their own personal devices, like laptops, phones and tablets.

"The idea is you're getting something presented for something that's personal to you," Basile said. "I can see exactly what you see."

At 10 a.m. on every second Tuesday of the month, the library presents Technology Tuesday, a lecture and demonstration session focusing on a specific technology topic. The session is followed by a question-and-answer period.

"Anyone can benefit from it," Basile said. "Most people have gaps in their understanding. They're using computers in their everyday lives, but there are parts that are missed. They've built skills without the foundations. Many people know the answer that they're looking for; they just need reassurance. I never get true, true beginners."

Because it is ever evolving, technology is always the newest thing. For the most part, the people Basile works with did not grow up with computer technology.

"It's definitely all adults. I'm not helping college-age people," said Basile. "They're people who are currently working. Some use advanced systems at work. It's people who are established in their careers and looking to fill in the gaps. It's when they're doing things for themselves that they get stuck. What's challenging is that it's rapidly changing. You feel like you master one thing, then you go back and try to do the same thing and everything is different. There are still people who don't own a computer or know where to start."

Technology support is just one of the many services and programs offered by the MTPL. In many ways, it's just a modern example of how libraries continue to serve their communities.

"We're all about free access to information," said Basile. "It's such a key skill now to use technology. Libraries have always helped people to gather information. With the tech appointments we're trying to meet a specific need. We find that it's a useful model. The role of the library is helping people navigate everyday life."

"I'm pretty knowledgeable," added Basile. "But if I don't know an answer immediately, I can get it. You just have to know how to get there. I bring a lot of patience."

The Manheim Township Public Library is located at 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. For additional information about the library's technology support program, go to http://www.mtpl.info/tech-classes.
