Presentation to focus on the Four Chaplains

The Military Oral History Club of Lancaster County will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m. at VFW Post 2435, 401 Manor St., Columbia. The meeting is open to the public.

The speaker will be Lou Lavetan, a board member of the Four Chaplains' Memorial of York County. He will present the story of the four chaplains who perished on the USAT Dorchester on Feb. 3, 1943. The ship was torpedoed by a German submarine off Newfoundland in the North Atlantic. Of the 902 men aboard the ship, only 230 were rescued. Among those who perished were four chaplains of different faiths who gave up their life vests to others when the supply ran out.
