Church to present Lenten concert on Palm Sunday

Arts on the Square will present "A Lenten Journey From Darkness to Light" on Palm Sunday, March 24, at 6 p.m. at Market Square Presbyterian Church, 20 S. Second St., Harrisburg. The performance will feature a 40-voice choir, soloists, an organ, and a chamber orchestra.

The program will include 19th-century French Romantic composer Theodore Dubois' famous "The Seven Last Words of Christ," musical settings of seven short phrases uttered by Jesus on the cross. Perhaps the best-known work of Dubois, it was written in 1867. It represents moments of violence and darkness as the choir interprets the role of the crowd, but the work then emerges from this darkness.

Contrasting with the dark words from the cross is "Illuminare," a work by contemporary American composer Elaine Hagenberg. "Illuminare" consists of five movements for choir and chamber orchestra. Using lesser-known sacred Latin, Greek, and English texts, the piece takes listeners through a season of beauty and goodness that has been disrupted by darkness and confusion. Hagenberg is a graduate of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Tyler A. Canonico, minister of music and organist at Market Square Church, will conduct.

A freewill offering will be received. Free parking will be provided by the church in the adjacent and connected Market Square Garage. The church is accessible to all people. For more information, see http://www.marketsquarechurch.org/concerts.
