Program to examine Supreme Court cases

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will host Robert Frick as the guest speaker at its meeting on Monday, April 15. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy.

In a program titled "Supreme Court Decision: Engel v. Vitale (1962)," Frick will examine two closely associated Supreme Court cases: Engel v. Vitale, decided in 1962, and the School District of Abington v. Schempp, decided in 1963. These cases focused on religious activities, such as prayer, in schools.

Frick had a 45-year career in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District, where he served for three years as an elementary teacher and 42 years as an administrator. He spent the last 15 of those years as superintendent of schools until retirement in 2011. He enjoys speaking on a variety of historical topics.

The meeting is free and open to the public. Refreshments will follow the program.

The society building is open every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., weather permitting. Members of the public may conduct research and view the displays of Mount Joy memorabilia. To learn more about the historical society, visit http://www.mountjoyhistory.com.
