American Legion to host open house

Community members are invited to visit Col. Jacob Morgan American Legion Post 537 in Morgantown during an open house set for Saturday, April 20. The Legion will open at noon, and special events will take place from 1 to 6 p.m.

The first-time event is designed to encourage new members to join and to acquaint the public with the Legion's activities. "The goal is to get people familiar with the Legion," said Linda Jacobs, historian, noting that information will be available at the event for those who would be interested in membership. "We will have food, entertainment and music."

Live DJ entertainment will be provided by Sir Charles Distinctive Entertainment & DJ Services. Stand-up comedian Alan Massenburg will be featured from 1:45 to 2:30 p.m.

Food will be offered for sale by Russo's Gourmet Foods & Market, an Italian market in Wyomissing. Also featured will be a cornhole tournament as well as a silent auction and a Chinese auction. Auction items will include gift cards, gift baskets and power tools that have been donated by Lezzer Lumber of Green Hills.

Proceeds from the food sales and auctions will benefit the Behavioral Health & Wellness Center, a nonprofit organization that addresses mental health, addiction and recovery. The center was founded by Dave and Michelle Deavitt. To learn more, visit http://www.wellnessvr.org or search for "Behavioral Health and Wellness Center VR" on Facebook.

Jacobs explained that the American Legion is a veterans' organization, but social memberships are available to others. The post also includes the Sons of the American Legion, which is for members whose parents served in the U.S. military; the ladies auxiliary; and the American Legion Riders motorcycle group.

Among its activities, the post awards an annual scholarship to a Twin Valley High School student, participates in Wreaths Across America and holds a Veterans Day ceremony, followed by a free dinner for veterans and their spouses. A color guard from the post provides a rifle salute and taps during Memorial Day ceremonies held in both Elverson and Morgantown. Also participating in the ceremonies are members of Boy Scout Troop 37, which is sponsored by the American Legion.

The post offers various social events, including karaoke and trivia nights and open pool nights. Guests must be accompanied by a member.

One of the most popular events hosted by the post is its monthly chicken barbecue. The next chicken barbecue will be held on Saturday, May 11, from 11 a.m. until sold out. The auxiliary will also hold its annual Mother's Day flower sale that day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Annual Legion-sponsored events that are open to the community include an Easter egg hunt and Christmas parties for children and adults. The post is also home to a Little Free Library.
