Program to explore hawk watching

The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will meet on Thursday, June 13, at 7 p.m. at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area Visitor's Center, 100 Museum Road, Stevens.

David Brown, a professional hawk watch counter, will present "Hawk Watching 101: An Introduction to the Hobby and Science of Counting Migrating Raptors."

Every spring and fall, hawk watchers gather at migration bottlenecks to witness and quantify the spectacle of migrating hawks, eagles, falcons, and vultures. Brown will share the history of hawk watching in Pennsylvania from its origins 100 years ago through the present day. He will also discuss how to get involved, what equipment is needed, and the basics of raptor identification.

Brown is a professional hawk watch counter from Lycoming County. He has 14 seasons of experience as the official counter at hawk watches in Delaware, New Jersey, and New York. He is a co-founder of LycoBirds, a website and YouTube channel that provides educational content for birders. Brown is especially known for his video series on raptor identification and his daily video summaries from the Braddock Bay Hawk Watch.

The program is free and open to the public. For more details, call 717-856-3851 or 717-725-2717.
