EPHS to host interactive Civil War encampment

The East Petersburg Historical Society (EPHS) will host a Civil War encampment from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, at the Daniel Wolf Museum, 1905 State St., East Petersburg. The free community event will offer members of the public an opportunity to learn about history from re-enactors in full period-accurate attire, including uniforms, as they showcase a traditional camp layout used during the Civil War.

Members of the 71st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment California will hold firing demonstrations at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Between demonstrations, those portraying soldiers will be stationed throughout the camp to answer guests' questions and to explain the intricacies of the life of a Civil War soldier. The encampment will highlight battlefield medical practices and cooking demonstrations of meals commonly consumed at the time of the conflict.

"We call the event we put together living history. There's no fighting; basically, we set up camp, and anyone can come and learn about the group, the war and how the soldiers were back then," said Daina Stanley, a member of the 71st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment California.

Refreshments and memorabilia will be available to purchase throughout the day; proceeds will benefit EPHS. "Everyone is welcome to attend an exciting glimpse of the living history," EPHS president Samuel Maurer IV said. "We are featuring Civil War-era soldiers, food and dress for historical curiosities and fun for the whole family."

Since 1976, EPHS has striven to preserve East Petersburg's rich history by maintaining a display of significant artifacts and curios, which are accompanied by a wealth of information for visitors of the Daniel Wolf Museum. The museum is open to the public from 9 a.m. to noon on the first Saturday of every month. "If you forget the past, you begin to repeat it," Maurer said. "We have to remember the Civil War so we are not doomed to experience such a conflict ever again."

EPHS hosts a rotating lineup of guest speakers at 7 p.m. on the first Mondays of March, April May, June and October. Each guest speaker event is held at the East Petersburg Community Building, 6051 Pine St.
