Community band plans concert

The South Hanover Township Community Band will present a concert on Friday, July 5, at the township's amphitheater in Patriot Park, 161 Patriot Way, Hershey. The performance will begin at 8 p.m. and last about an hour.

Selections will include patriotic tunes and Broadway medleys. Attendees are advised to bring a blanket or chair. After the concert, attendees may stay to see Hersheypark's fireworks at about 10:15 p.m.

Admission is free. Parking is available by donation to the Union Deposit Volunteer Fire Company.

The South Hanover Township Community Band was formed in 2021 as a revitalization of the Union Deposit Community Band, which existed early in the 1900s. The new band's first concert was in August 2021 and featured 18 performers. The band currently numbers 30 to 35 members, and it is under the direction of Keith Richardson, who is also the Lower Dauphin High School director of bands.

Membership is open to anyone who has ever played in a concert band, even if it was not recent. There are no auditions. During the spring, summer and fall, the band rehearses each Wednesday at the South Hanover Township administration building on Patriot Way.
