Jazz piano concert set for First Friday

Lancaster jazz pianist Colin Mekeel will be featured in a 30-minute concert on First Friday, July 5, at 8 p.m. at First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. The program will include Duke Ellington's "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," Thelonious Monk's "I Mean You," and Chick Corea's "Windows."

Mekeel is the founder of the Temple Avenue jazz combo, which he started in 2011 while a junior in high school in collaboration with older friends who were in Temple University's jazz program. Mekeel, 29, continues to play with Temple Avenue in ensembles ranging from duos to sextets. The group performs at concerts, festivals, dances, parties, restaurants, and other events across southcentral Pennsylvania. Mekeel also performs as a solo pianist.

A graduate of HACC Lancaster Campus, the Manheim Township resident cites jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis as his biggest musical influence. Mekeel studies jazz piano with Kirk Reese and classical piano with Justin Badgerow.

Admission is free. For more information, contact the church office at 717-397-5149.
