15th 3D archery shoot scheduled

Woodcrest Retreat, a camp providing a variety of experiences including day, resident, adventure, and Conquerors special needs camp, is located on a 110-acre wooded hillside in northeastern Lancaster County. In 2021, the camp served more than 1,800 children. According to Jason Martin, operations director at Woodcrest, by 2023 that number had increased to more than 1,900. This year, more than 2,000 participated.

To make it possible for all those children to attend camp, Woodcrest Retreat holds several fundraisers, including a golf tournament and auction. About $80,000 a year needs to be raised to cover the camp budget. For the last 14 years, the camp has also held a benefit 3D archery shoot. In 2023, nearly 150 shooters took part in the event.

The 15th annual shoot will be held at Woodcrest, 225 Woodcrest Road, Ephrata, on Saturday, Aug. 24. The course will be open from 7 to 10 a.m., after which a hot brunch will be served. The course will reopen at 11 a.m. and remain open until 2 p.m. There is a fee to take part in the shoot, which includes brunch, a speaker, and opportunities to win door prizes. The price will be discounted for those age 15 and under. A separate price will be offered for those who take part in only the afternoon shoot. Organizers noted that any style of bow may be used on the course and that families are encouraged to take part in the event together.

This year's course will consist of 30 targets depicting North American wildlife. "(The speaker) is Marshal Zimmerman, associate pastor at Hinkletown (Mennonite) Church," said Jason Martin, operations director of Woodcrest Retreat, who noted that Zimmerman will deliver a short meditation on a hunting-related topic.

As in years past, the shoot will feature door prizes consisting of hunting- and outdoor-related items mostly provided by Weaver's Store in Fivepointville. Vendors specializing in outdoor sporting equipment will also have displays on-site.

Three levels of target sponsorship are available for this year's shoot. Individuals interested in sponsoring may call 717-738-2233.

Those who wish to take part in the 3D archery shoot are encouraged to register by Monday, Aug. 19, by calling the camp or visiting http://www.WoodcrestRetreat.org/events/archery.
