Events to explore cultures, music

Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, will host its fourth annual International Fun Day and kick off the 2023-24 Starlight Tea Concert Series on Saturday, Aug. 24.

International Fun Day will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the church grounds. Activities will move indoors if it rains.

Representatives of at least 15 countries and other areas will set up table displays with information, activities, artwork, and food representing their country. Children will receive a passport to be stamped or adorned with stickers at each display they visit. When their passport is filled, they can receive a prize.

Displays are confirmed for Afghanistan, Australia, the Bahamas, Colombia, Denmark, the Dominican Republic, England, Germany, Guatemala, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, and Scotland. Additional countries may be represented, as well. Marie Bachman's "Our World" quilt, featuring fabrics gathered from around the world, will be on display, along with a detailed notebook that tells its story. Dancers from the Paloma School of Irish Dance will perform at 10:40 a.m.

The United States will be represented by a hot dog lunch and performances by local musician Matt Wheeler at 10 a.m. and noon. The lunch is free, and donations will be accepted.

Other attractions will include face painting and a bounce house for children with an Eastern Europe and Asia theme. Signs will encourage prayers for peace in parts of the world that are experiencing violence.

Adults may participate in a giveaway drawing for gift baskets created by Dee Zimmerman. The drawings will occur at 12:45 p.m., and entrants must be present to win. Each guest also will receive a chance at one of four cash prizes, which will be awarded at 12:55 p.m.; winners need not be present.

The first event in the Starlight Tea Concert Series will be presented by the chamber chorus Musical Associates at 7 p.m. The concert is titled "Sacred Spaces." Through music from the 15th century to the present, the concert will explore how people experience different aspects of the sacred in physical, emotional, spiritual, and musical spaces.

Emery DeWitt, who founded the summer chamber chorus in 2003 and directed it since its beginning, has handed the reins to new artistic director Jon Clemens. Clemens has participated with various musical organizations in the Lancaster community, including being a founding member of Musical Associates. With graduate degrees in music composition and theory, he currently is board president of Allegro Lancaster. Musical Associates is now an Allegro Lancaster ensemble.

Additional concerts will take place on select Saturdays, unless otherwise noted. Dates and performers or events will include Sept. 21, Rizzetta's Tones; Oct. 26, Maria Corley and Christyan Seay; Nov. 23, Silver, Wood, & Ivory; Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 4 and 5, 2025, Epiphany concerts featuring the Lancaster COB choirs; March 22, Two Rivers Chamber Music String Quartet; April 5, Elizabethtown College Student Showcase; and May 10, jazz pianists Stephanie Trick and Paolo Alderighi.
