Atglen to celebrate Community Day

Penningtonville Presbyterian Church and Atglen Public Library (APL) will present the 12th annual Atglen Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Attractions, which will include vendors, food, live entertainment and children's games, will take place at Atglen Community Park, 400 Ridge Ave., Atglen.

While there will not be a car show at this year's event, a new attraction will be a mobile zip line. "They can set it up on any surface, so our plan is to have it on Ridge Avenue. It will be roughly a block long. They adjust the incline," explained Cristi Hahn, who is co-chair of Community Day along with Lillian Thompson. "We try to do one big new thing every year. We had a mechanical bull one year, bumper cars and ax throwing. We keep switching it up."

Food, including chicken barbecue, fresh-cut french fries, hot dogs and hamburgers, will be provided by the church trustees. "The trustees will (prepare) the food, and the deacons will have a baked goods table," noted Hahn.

Craft vendors will be set up along the perimeter of the park, and there will be booths set up by representatives from local organizations. Other attractions will include an apple pie-eating contest, a dunk tank, a display of emergency vehicles by the Christiana Fire Company and a book giveaway by APL.

"We will be giving away books and other fun items," said APL library director Robbyn Kehoe. "We will also be able to make library cards for people on-site. And, we will have a (prize drawing) for several pairs of tickets to the Crayola Experience."

Entertainment will be offered throughout the day. Matt Holub will perform pop music on acoustic guitar. "He has been with us every single year. This will be his 12th year," noted Hahn. "He is also the (master of ceremonies), and he will make announcements (about the day's activities)."

The event will also include performances by dancers from Steel City Dance and Gymnastics, a magic show and a live animal show by Critter Connections.

A live auction will begin at 2 p.m., and there will be an opportunity to win gift baskets. Among the auction items will be home decor, gift baskets and gift cards. "That is the big fundraising portion of the day," Hahn said. Auction updates will be posted on the Atglen Community Day Facebook page.

There will also be children's games and activities. "For a fee, you get a wristband for unlimited games and the bounce house inflatable obstacle course," Hahn said, adding that those who donate canned goods for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC) will receive a discount. "We have a wonderful sponsors, including Atglen Borough, which will keep the prices really reasonable but still keep it a fundraising event."

Proceeds from Community Day are given to the APL and other local organizations. "We give a large portion to the library and make donations to the Octorara food cupboard, Parkesburg POINT (Youth Center) and Christiana Fire Company and ambulance," Hahn added.

In addition to the Community Day festivities, a Family Fun Walk/Run will be held, sponsored by the Atglen Park and Recreation Commission. The starting and ending point will be at Ridge and Chester avenues at the park entrance. Registration will begin at 10 a.m., and the race will start at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of a fee, walkers and runners are asked to bring nonperishable food items for the OAFC. More information about the walk/run is available by visiting http://www.atglen.org or calling the borough office at 610-593-6854.
