Church to offer GriefShare program

Mt. Nebo Church, 673 Martic Heights Drive, Pequea, will offer the GriefShare support program on Thursdays starting Sept. 12. The free program will meet every Thursday from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. through Dec. 19, with the exception of Nov. 28.

The meetings will incorporate new material from the GriefShare program, which offers resources to help those who have lost a loved one. During each meeting, participants will discuss a specific topic, such as learning to adapt to altered patterns and routines. The meeting will include a video and group discussion and activities using the GriefShare workbook.

The session will be led by Ron Harris and his wife, Sandy Harris. Ron has previously participated in multiple GriefShare groups throughout the county, and he began leading the program at Mt. Nebo Church last year. Due to Ron's experience with the program, both as a participant and a trained group leader, he volunteered to reinstate the group to give other people in the community the support he once received. Ron also wished to make the program accessible for those who aren't able to register for other groups in the area due to a limited number of spaces.

Ron first joined a GriefShare group five years ago after the death of his wife, Majorie, to whom he had been married for 54 years. Sandy joined Ron's group at Mt. Nebo Church last year, and she offered to assist with the program this year to accommodate female members who may feel more comfortable sharing their experiences with another woman.

Before retiring in 2004, Ron worked as a pupil services coordinator for Penn Manor School District for 34 years. Although he worked closely with school psychologists, guidance counselors and school nurses over the course of his career, Ron is not a licensed psychologist; he will offer participants information about services that he is unable to provide during GriefShare sessions.

Preregistration is appreciated, but walk-ins are welcome. To register, contact Sandy at 717-682-9522 or Mt. Nebo Church at 717-284-4331. In the event of hazardous road conditions, the weekly meeting will be canceled, and the program will be extended.
