Honey Brook to celebrate Harmony Day

Honey Brook Harmony Day will be presented by the Honey Brook Community Partnership (HBCP) on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. While most events will take place at the Honey Brook Fire Company, 679 Firehouse Lane, local businesses, churches and community organizations will also participate with special activities.

At the fire company, there will be carnival games for people of all ages, and emergency vehicles will be on display. "They will have their trucks out for a 'Touch a Truck' (activity) and Elverson Honey Brook EMS will have a CPR demonstration," said HBCP member Dawn Schaffer, a member of the Harmony Day organizing committee.

Guitarist Paul Colombo will provide musical entertainment from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the firehouse. "I will perform a variety of acoustic music, (including) songs by the Eagles, the Beatles, John Mayer, Jack Johnson and James Taylor," Colombo noted.

Dr. John Slippy from Living Well Chiropractic will be on hand to answer questions as part of "Ask the Doc," and there will be police canine demonstrations from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A highlight of the day will be a Blankets of Honor presentation to a local veteran at noon at the Long Way Home, 4690 Horseshoe Pike.

Community groups and businesses that will set up at the firehouse include Boy Scout Troop 9, PA CareerLink, Legal Aid, Little Mates Child Development Center, Honey Brook Food Pantry, Chesco Connect, Living God Lutheran Church, Honey Brook Presbyterian Church, Tel Hai Camp & Retreat and the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County.

Food for sale at the firehouse will include soft pretzels and hot dogs offered by the Honey Brook Women's Club and tacos by Honey Brook American Legion Post 422. The Honey Brook Youth Center will offer a beverage cart.

Calvary Chapel of Honey Brook, 80 Village Square, will offer free homemade ice cream and free Bibles. The Long Way Home will sell refreshments in the garden area and Suburban Brewing Company/322 Taproom, 3041 Horseshoe Pike, will offer free hot dogs and snow cones for youths age 12 and under.

Members of the Twin Valley High School Mini-THON will have a car wash at American Legion Post 422, 4828 Horseshoe Pike, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The car wash is free, but donations will be accepted for Four Diamonds, an organization that supports cancer research and raises money for families with children being treated for cancer.

New this year will be a demonstration by members of Honey Brook Speedway. "They will bring actual cars from the racetrack," said Schaffer.

Other events on Harmony Day will include an appearance by Stubby the helicopter and face painting by Brian Williamson from Tel Hai Camp. Visitors will be able to spin the Harmony Day wheel to win small promotional products provided by local businesses. The wheel will be manned by staff members from M&T Bank.

A yard sale will be held at the Honey Brook Presbyterian Church, 4331 Horseshoe Pike. Honey Brook Hardware, 5004 Horseshoe Pike, will have a yard sale and food sales from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free paper shredding will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon at the office of State Farm Insurance agent Ryan Tyler, 161 Pequea Ave. There will be a limit of three boxes of documents per person.

Howell Masonic Lodge, 1505 Walnut Road, will host a blood drive from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Eby's General Store, 3801 Horseshoe Pike, will offer a discount on hoagies during Harmony Day.

According to Schaffer, the HBCP organizing committee has been meeting since February to plan the event, and most local neighbors also hold their own yard sales on Harmony Day. "The permit is waived that day," she noted.
