Church posts gun violence prevention event

Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz, will display a Memorial to the Lost from Saturday, Sept. 21, to Sunday, Sept. 29, as a gun violence prevention initiative.

The church will dedicate the memorial on Sept. 21 at 11 a.m. The memorial will display dozens of T-shirts, each bearing the name, date of death, and age at death of a person in Lancaster County who was killed through homicide using a gun. The memorial is an education tool developed by Heeding God's Call to End Gun Violence to honor these murder victims, their surviving family members, and the community.

Heeding God's Call to End Gun Violence is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit, faith-based organization dedicated to working at the grassroots level to reduce gun violence in local communities and throughout the United States through education, advocacy, and common-sense gun laws. The organization is headquartered in Philadelphia and has a regional site in Lancaster County.

In addition to dedicating the memorial, people will gather at the peace pole in front of the church to pray and sing in recognition of the International Day of Peace and to increase awareness of gun violence and its impact on the community.

Activities for action will be available after the service. Craft activities will allow children and families to share thoughts about gun violence prevention.
