Thousands of books will highlight Kreutz Creek Library sale

When people come to the Kreutz Creek Library's book sale, they are always pleasantly surprised, said Brent Peterman, president of the Friends of Kreutz Creek Library.

"Our sale stands out due to the sheer size and organization," he shared. "New sale attendees often comment on the great job our book sorters have done at organizing and labeling the 36 categories of items we have available."

In fact, the sale is so big, it won't fit in the library. Instead, it is held in the five large garage bays where Hellam Township usually stores and repairs road maintenance equipment.

"The sale is way too large to fit into a library side room or basement," Peterman explained, expressing thanks to the township for allowing the Friends to use the space. "We have a huge space in the Hellam Township municipal garage to spread out over 22,000 items for our customers to comfortably explore."

The book sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28. It will be held at 45 Walnut Springs Road, York, across the road from the Kreutz Creek Library.

"This sale, we especially have lots of kids' books - story books, chapter books," Peterman said. "However, most of our books are (for) adults/teens, including fiction, westerns, romance, young adult, cookbooks, history, coffee table books, literature, humor, schooling, art. There are so many books that almost everyone can find several books that interest them."

The sale is not limited to books. "We have a table full of brooches, necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings. You will not find a lot of gold and diamonds, but you will find fantastic costume jewelry and less-precious stones," Peterman commented. "Some of our best customers enjoy buying lots of jewelry to take apart and use pieces and parts to make their own creations."

The sale will feature hundreds of DVDs and Blu-rays, CDs and puzzles. "We have piles of puzzles that range from simple puzzles designed for kids to puzzles with thousands of pieces that would take me two years to complete," he said, adding that the sale also includes miscellaneous items. "There is a fun table that includes all the random items that are donated. This table has included board games, CD cases, brainteaser puzzles, artwork."

Baked goods, including cookies, brownies, fudge, pumpkin loaves and bread, will also be for sale.

Proceeds from the book sale are used to support expenses of the library, Peterman said, noting that the Friends group provides 25% of the library's operating budget.

"This sale is an important part of making sure this community library is funded and available for everyone to use," he remarked. "The sale proceeds also fund special programs, circulation and equipment that is not part of the operating budget but help make Kreutz Creek Library such a fun and comfortable space to visit."

Items are priced to sell both days, but on Saturday, people may fill a bag for one price from noon to 3 p.m.

"Bring your own tote bag or bags to fill with books that remain after the first 12 hours of the sale. There will still be lots to choose from," Peterman said. "Many people come for the sale on Friday to purchase their favorites and then come back Saturday afternoon to purchase a ... bag of books outside of their normal reading selections."
