Talk to focus on Edgar Allan Poe

The Millersville Area Historical Society will host a presentation titled "Edgar A. Poe's Formative Years and the Best Kept Secrets of His Link to Lancaster County" when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, in the Millersville Borough Administration and Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

Mike Kaufhold, Millersville Borough Council (MBC) member and retired Penn Manor High School English teacher, will be the speaker.

Using slides and other visuals, including old movie posters, to illustrate his talk, Kaufhold will reflect on the people who influenced his interest in Poe and then point out links to Lancaster County that aided Poe during his most trying financial times. He also will comment on the scope of Poe's contributions to American literature. A question-and-answer session will close the meeting.

Kaufhold, a resident of Millersville since 1978, retired from teaching in 2013 after serving Penn Manor for 33 years. In retirement, in addition to serving on the MBC, he continues to officiate basketball games, and he volunteers for the Loft Community Partnership. A 1965 graduate of McCaskey High School, he earned a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in English from Millersville University.
