High school students are all-in for homecoming festivities

This year, Hempfield High School's theme is "All In." The theme highlights the dedication of students and staff members alike who go above and beyond, dedicating themselves to anything from academics to enrichment activities. The school is also continuing its recent efforts to expand the high school's sense of community to the greater community, and it invites local residents to join in its homecoming celebration by participating in a full roster of upcoming events.

The high school will kick off its homecoming festivities with the annual fall fling on Wednesday, Sept. 25, during the school day. Akin to a pep rally, the fall fling will take place at the stadium on campus, and it will feature a presentation and various outdoor activities for students to participate in as they socialize and promote school spirit. Representatives of the National Guard and multiple school clubs will be in attendance. At 7 p.m., juniors and seniors will compete in the traditional flag football game at the stadium, and the homecoming king will be crowned at halftime.

On Friday, Sept. 27, Hempfield High School's National Honor Society (NHS) chapter will offer tours of the building to alumni from 5 to 6 p.m. beginning in the performing arts center. At 7 p.m., the football team will face off against Penn Manor High School during the homecoming football game at Georgelis Law Firm Stadium. The homecoming queen will be crowned at halftime.

This year's homecoming court includes students Alex Gregory, Kacey Klinger, Addie Leber, Julianna Kreider, Evy Sahd, Simeon Vieland, Cole Pham, Ty Myers, David Ennis and Cole Gibbons. The final round of voting to decide the homecoming king and queen will close on Sept. 25 prior to the flag football game.

At 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, the school will hold the Hempfield Homecoming Parade. The parade will start on Stanley Avenue in Landisville near the entrance of the high school, following a route through the surrounding neighborhoods before the procession concludes in the parking lot of the quad on campus. The parade will feature Hempfield High School's marching band, homecoming court and sports teams, in addition to police officers and firefighters from local police departments and fire stations. Refreshments will be available to purchase from food trucks in the quad parking lot after the parade.

In 2023, the school held its first homecoming parade in more than 20 years. Until the 1980s, the high school held an annual parade that featured a specific theme and various floats. After the school's marching band began holding a parade a few years ago, members of the Student Council decided to expand the event to include sports teams and local first responders in an effort to resurrect the former tradition.

"When you go to a college homecoming, they have activities designed to connect people back to their school. We're trying to make homecoming about not just the students here, but alumni and the community as well to show off all the amazing things Hempfield does and how involved our students are," said Bill Brossman, principal of Hempfield High School. "They're the ones doing the hard work, showing up every day and striving for excellence. Our students are all-in."
