Strasburg Heritage Society sets meeting

The Strasburg Heritage Society will meet on Monday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St. The meeting is open to the public, and there is no cost to attend.

The speaker will be Joe Deevy, founder and editor of the Strasburg Heritage Journal. The journal is published twice a year, and free copies are distributed to 2,500 households in Strasburg Borough and Strasburg Township. Now working on the 11th issue, Deevy has been the editor since the beginning. He also fills other roles, including researcher, writer, and business manager.

Topics of Deevy's presentation will be the origins and purpose of the Strasburg Heritage Journal; the steps needed to produce it; research methods and the fun of uncovering lost stories; his approach to writing and editing; and the creation of the publication's layout using desktop publishing and image editing software, with illustrations coming from old and new photographs, artwork, and graphics. Deevy will also explain the role of advertisers, who make the endeavor possible by funding the printing and distribution.

Elections for positions on the Strasburg Heritage Society Board of Trustees will also be held at this meeting. To enter the race or nominate someone, email strasburgheritagesociety@gmail.com.
