Bear Creek School installs Buddy Benches

Bear Creek School unveiled two Buddy Benches on its playground on Oct. 2, marking the culmination of a community effort led by Etown Common Sense and the Bear Creek Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). The dedication ceremony, which drew local families and supporters, celebrated the installation of the benches designed to promote inclusion and foster friendships among students during recess.

The project was made possible through a partnership with Sammie's Buddy Bench Project, an initiative that encourages schools and communities to collect No. 2 high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic to be recycled into durable Buddy Benches. Thanks to Etown Common Sense and Bear Creek PTO, the school successfully collected more than 1,000 pieces of plastic, qualifying for discounted benches.

As part of the Buddy Bench concept, students who are feeling isolated can sit on the bench, signaling to their peers that they are looking for a friend to play with. The goal is to break down social barriers and encourage positive interactions, helping students build friendships and feel more included.

The dedication event included a brief ceremony, followed by a light snack for attendees. Families and children were able to see the benches up close, hear more about Sammie's Buddy Bench Project and learn how the initiative has positively impacted schools across the country.

Sammie's Buddy Bench Project, which began as a grassroots movement, continues to spread across the country, helping schools create inclusive spaces for students through recycled plastic. To learn more about the project, visit http://www.sammiesbuddybenchproject.com.
