Holidays bring out best in Township residents

Despite its long and storied history, Township's Holiday Open House is not, in many ways, a traditional holiday celebration.

"(The Holiday Open House) is an enjoyable family event that kicks off the holiday season," said Harry Norton, the Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning Department's adult and family program manager. "It's a fun, festive family event, and it's always been that way. It's a great small feel that creates ambiance. It's a little more laid back than some of our events. It's a chance for families to come together and enjoy time together."

The department will host the 45th edition of its annual Holiday Open House from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, at Stauffer Mansion, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. Members of the Manheim Township Police Department and members of the Manheim Township Fire Rescue squad will also be on hand collecting toys and nonperishable food items for Lancaster Toys for Tots.

The drop-in event is free to attend, and everyone is invited. Cookies, cocoa, coffee and candy canes will be provided free of charge.

"It's nondenominational," said Norton. "It's a celebration of community and family."

Entertainment-wise, the Holiday Open House will feature a youth program performance by Dance Sations beginning at 1:05 p.m.; sleight of hand, tricks and illusions from Eddy Ray Magic beginning at 1:45 p.m.; and a choral presentation by the Manheim Township High School Troubadours at 2:30 p.m. Santa Claus is expected to arrive at 1:15 p.m., riding on Manheim Township Fire Rescue's new fire truck.

"The best part of the event is just putting smiles on faces," said Norton. "When people see value in what you're doing, stuff like that can warm your heart. Another favorite part for me is hearing the young talented voices of the Manheim Township Troubadours."

Also at the event, there will be arts and crafts for the kids, a refreshment table, a mood-enhancing fire pit and holiday music playing. Stauffer Mansion will be decorated inside and out with lights and ornaments.

Nearly 400 residents of Manheim Township and surrounding communities are expected to attend.

"(Getting out, physical activity and meeting people are) good for your soul. It's good for your mind," said Norton. "It's good for your health. It's good to be connected to your community. That really is the reason for everything. Our role is to provide recreation opportunities to our residents through programming and facilities. There are so many options available to residents in Manheim Township. The goal is to replenish and refresh your spirits and your mind."

The Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning Department was founded in the 1960s through a collaboration between the township and the Manheim Township School District. The department hosts four special community events throughout the year.

"We do have a pretty good track record in the community for having this event," said Norton. "There are some other (local events) to choose from, but ours has always been well attended. There's always something being added to all of our events. Over the years, the township has stepped up and provided for its residents."
