Runners and walkers brave the rain at Tel Hai Turkey Bowl

Although rainy weather did deter some runners and walkers from taking part in the 33rd annual Turkey Bowl on Thanksgiving morning at Tel Hai Camp & Retreat, organizers were still pleased with the numbers.

"We had 373 finishers in the 5K race (and) 46 finishers in the 1-mile children's fun run," reported Bruce Gregory, camp director. "They all did a great job in their race - even the real young ones who pushed through to the finish line."

The top overall male winner of the 5K was Frankie Disilvestro, 18, of Honey Brook, with a time of 16 minutes and 42 seconds. "That was almost a one minute faster than last year's winner," Gregory said.

The top overall female 5K winner was Laura Posh, 20, of Morgantown, with a time of 20:33.

The top overall male finisher in the 1-mile children's fun run was David Petersheim, 11, of Paradise, with a time of 6:16. Anneke Kabot, 11, from Midland Park, N.J., was the top overall female finisher in the 1-mile event with a time of 7:31.

"As always, a number of parents and grandparents ran alongside the young ones encouraging them on," said Gregory.

He added that those who attended the Turkey Bowl included first-time participants as well as those who attend the event annually. "We thank all who braved the weather and came out to support the race," said Gregory. "We are grateful to all of those who have made this a family tradition. We also saw many new runners this year."

About 40 volunteers helped out at the Turkey Bowl, and more than 22 local businesses and individuals sponsored or donated to the race.
