Library plans January programs

The Eastern Lancaster County (ELANCO) Library, 11 Chestnut Drive, New Holland, will offer a variety of events and programs to the community. Registration is not required unless noted. For details, visit http://www.elancolibrary.org or contact 717-354-0525 or adagostino@elancolibrary.org.

Music & Movement: All About Instruments will be offered on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. Children will sing, dance, chant, listen to music, move, and play instruments while exploring the patterns and sounds of the English language. Each month the program will focus on a different theme. In January, kids will learn about the major instruments of the band and the orchestra. The program is open to those birth to age 6 and their siblings.

The library offers various activities regularly. In January, these will include Readers' Roundtable Book Discussion, for adults, on Monday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m.; Hooks and Needles Yarn Craft Club, for people of all ages who knit or crochet, on Monday, Jan. 13, at 6:30 p.m.; and Lego Creation Club, recommended for kids age 8 and up as well as siblings, on Thursday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m.

The library will also offer Preschool Story Time, recommended for children ages 4 to 6, every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. and Toddler Thursdays, recommended for children from birth to age 3, every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. The January theme will be "Cats and Dogs." Siblings are welcome to join in.

Teen Tuesdays will be held on Tuesdays at 3:30 p.m. The program will provide crafts, games, snacks, and more for tweens and teens. The January dates and themes are Jan. 7, Mental Health Day: Reflection and Goal Setting; Jan. 14, STEM Winter Olympics; Jan. 21, Research Day: Investigate an Artist or Author; and Jan. 28, Financial Literacy Day: How to Spot Scams and Fraud.

Children of all ages accompanied by a parent or other caregiver may read aloud to Pepper the Labrador retriever during Read Aloud with Pepper the Dog! on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 2 p.m.

Julia Wiker, archivist and librarian with Mennonite Life, will present Researching Your Family Tree: Beginning Research at Mennonite Life on Thursday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. Attendees will learn how to use the Mennonite Life Library's online and on-site resources to research local Mennonite history and individuals' genealogy. The program is free of charge.

The library will host a Folded Book Art Class on Jan. 23 at 2 p.m. Jeannette Kolb, a longtime library volunteer and book artist, will share how to mark and fold the pages of a book to create a 3D sculpture, image, design, or word on the edge of the pages. Kolb will introduce the craft, display some of her work, demonstrate basic techniques, and get attendees started on their own creations. The class is limited to 10 adults, and preregistration is required. All supplies will be provided.
