McCarthy named as choir administrator

Michael McCarthy, who led the Washington National Cathedral's famed choirs for 21 years, has been named the first-ever executive director of the national award-winning Susquehanna Chorale. McCarthy will be responsible for all non-artistic aspects of the organization. The Harrisburg-based organization is undergoing administrative and operational changes as it anticipates the future retirement of its founder and current artistic director, Linda L. Tedford, and the eventual hiring of her successor.

McCarthy, a native of London, brings to the job extensive experience as a singer, conductor, and arts administrator. He has both managed and performed with internationally known choirs, and he has worked extensively with children's choirs, including a boys' choir that provided music for the "Harry Potter" and "Lord of the Rings" soundtracks. As director of music at the National Cathedral, he was responsible for all aspects of the cathedral's music program. From 2020 to 2024, he also served as its director of institutional planning.

Harrisburg-based Susquehanna Chorale comprises 40 adult singers, chosen by audition. Founded by Tedford in 1981, the organization also includes four choirs for children and youths.
