SECA offering a sweet treat for breakfast

The Southern End Community Association (SECA) is offering an opportunity to enjoy a sundae on a Saturday morning.

SECA is holding an inaugural Ice Cream for Breakfast event Saturday, Feb. 1, from 8 to 11 a.m. upstairs in the SECA Building, 299 Park Ave., Quarryville.

"Who doesn't want ice cream for breakfast?" SECA director Trevor Marsh said with a smile.

The cost of admission includes one sundae and one drink. Kids age 12 and under who are wearing pajamas will receive one ticket in a drawing for a prize.

Son's Ice Cream & Italian Ice of Quarryville is donating the ice cream, Marsh said.

Among the toppings will be chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and cherries. Marsh said there will not be chopped peanuts to ensure the event is safe for anyone with a peanut allergy.

Diners will pass by a sundae bar, placing their ice cream and fixings on top of a waffle.

The Ice Cream for Breakfast fundraiser is the brainfreeze, er, brainchild of SECA vice president Susan Noel.

"Susan had seen people doing an ice cream for breakfast event and thought this would be a good fundraiser for SECA," Marsh said.

The event is planned for Feb. 1 because the first Saturday in February is National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day.

National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day is an informal holiday said to have been started about 65 years ago by a New York state mother of six who sought to entertain her two youngest children on a cold, snowy morning.

"We thought it would be a fun event for kids and families," said Marsh. "It comes at our downtime, so this was a fun idea to do and add something to what we offer the community."

The immediate feedback has been positive. "We've had a lot of people liking the posts on social media, sharing, and making comments and tagging their friends," Marsh said. "We seem to have a good amount of interest for this day."

He's hoping it becomes a Southern End tradition. "We would like for this to become an annual fundraiser for SECA," said Marsh.

The director said he believes the Ice Cream for Breakfast event will greatly benefit the nonprofit's bottom line.

"With the rising prices in the economy for the pool and employees and everything, we're looking for fun, exciting ways to raise more money to continue to operate this park and programs we offer for people," Marsh said. "So this was a good idea for us to try something new, try something different, during a slow time of the year where we could really use another fundraiser."

SECA is planning another unique fundraiser, a St. Patrick's Day Money Party, for Saturday, March 8, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Each ticket will include a specific number on a bingo ball. Each ball will be placed into SECA's bingo machine, and the balls will be drawn one at a time, eliminating from the game the people with the corresponding numbers.

Prizes will be awarded along the way. The person with every 10th ticket number drawn gets their money back, essentially winning a meal and a fun evening for free. The final 10 will earn cash prizes.

A meal and drink are included in the ticket price. Space is limited.

SECA will also hold bingo nights throughout the year, including Fridays, Feb. 7 and 21, March 7 and 21, and April 4 and 18. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and games will begin at 6 p.m. Snacks and drinks will be available.
