LSAWC to hold Spring Tea

The Lampeter-Strasburg Area Woman's Club (LSAWC) will hold its Spring Tea With an American Girl from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 5.

The event, which is open to girls and their dolls, as well as mothers and grandmothers, will take place at First Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg.

Tea will be served along with light fare.

LSAWC co-president Elaine Benner said the tea will feature the 2025 American Girl doll Summer McKinny, who is a dog lover and enjoys baking. Each girl who attends will have a chance to win the doll.

The event will include a story about Summer and her interests, crafts for the girls to make for themselves and for their dolls, and prizes. The prizes will include doll furniture; doll clothing; and doll play items such as a small kitchen, a beauty salon chair, and accessories.

Benner said a surprise guest will be joining the girls. Each girl will receive a door prize of an apron, made by a club member, that reflects the doll's interest in baking.

"Club members spend countless hours behind the scenes preparing for the tea," Benner said. Members will be sewing outfits for the dolls, preparing the play items with accessories, and painting and reupholstering furniture pieces to enhance the products girls can win, she added.

"We have been doing it for 26 years, and we've had mothers (who have attended the Spring Tea as children) bring their daughters," Benner said. "It's generational."

Tickets are on sale. There is limited seating, and tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested in attending can purchase tickets by emailing lswomansclub@gmail.com or by calling Benner at 717-572-7010.

The girls in the area look forward to it," said Benner. "I thought playing with dolls was going away, but it's back. The girls are into tea and think it's a special event."

The Lampeter-Strasburg Area Woman's Club is a nonprofit organization whose objective is to make a difference in the community through outreach and events, Benner said.

The group, which has been active for more than 60 years, is made up of women between the ages of 30 and 80. "(The club members are) from various backgrounds that come together to learn more about each other and the community we live in," Benner said.

LSAWC meets August through May on the fourth Tuesday of each month at Wesley United Methodist Church, 40 W. Main St., Strasburg.

The get-togethers begin at 7 p.m. with a short business meeting followed by a special interest program and light refreshments. Previous programs have included a presentation on self-defense for women, outreach programs from a local veterans' organization, and a recap of the skills learned at the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) summer program. The club sponsors a Lampeter Strasburg junior to attend the HOBY convention.

In April, the club will offer a presentation on end-of-life conversations with a roundtable of local professionals. Each year, the organization holds two fundraising events. In addition to the Spring Tea, bingo is held at the Willow Street Fire Company. This year's bingo will be an indoor/outdoor plant and patio event to be held on Sunday, May 4. Tickets will go on sale on Tuesday, April 1.

The club sponsors two scholarships for graduating Lampeter-Strasburg High School seniors. Benner said the group also provides support to civic organizations such as veterans' groups, animal shelters, the Willow Street Fire Company, the Lampeter Fire Company, and the Strasburg Fire Company, as well as the Strasburg-Heisler Library. She added that the organization also helps people who experience an unexpected hardship or who have a specific need.

"It is an honor to belong to a group of great women that meet just once a month and provide back to the community consistently while having fun and nurturing lifelong friendships," Benner said.
