Cub Scout Pack 37 is seeking vendors for flea market

Cub Scout Pack 37 is seeking vendors to rent spaces for its biggest fundraiser, which will take place in conjunction with the Hempfield Community Memorial Day Flea Market on Monday, May 26.

"Hempfield Fire Department allows the Cub Scouts to rent out spaces (to vendors) on the field right next to it," Pack 37 treasurer Eric Kelshaw said. "It supports the Scouts, and it's a fun community event."

Pack 37 will set up shop from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the grounds of the fire department, 19 Main St., Landisville.

Pack 37 will sell a variety of food, including hamburgers, chicken potpie, breakfast sandwiches, popcorn, candy bars, and sodas. Kelshaw's wife, Melissa, is contacting local businesses, and she has already received donations from Wegmans, S. Clyde Weaver, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Sturgis Pretzels, Dieffenbach's Potato Chips, and Whiff Roasters.

In addition to selling food on the fire company grounds, Scouts, accompanied by adults, will take menus to neighboring yard sales to take orders.

Older Scouts will be stationed at the entrance of the fire company parking lot to accept donations.

"The boys learn to work as a team," Eric said. "They can earn money for their Scout accounts, which they can use to pay for trips and camping supplies. They learn how to talk to adults. They learn how to count money."

Proceeds from the food sales and space rentals will defray the cost of Pack 37's trip to Battleship New Jersey, where Scouts will take a tour, sleep in bunks, and dine in the mess hall. The funds will also pay for patches and neckerchiefs.

Eric said some of the money raised will go toward community meals the Scouts serve once or twice a year at their charter church, Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, which provides a free, semimonthly meal for members of the community who are in need. "We will use our money to purchase the food and ingredients," Eric said. "We then make the meal, and our parents and Scouts serve the community at the church."

Cub Scout Pack 37 meets Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 85 Brandt Blvd., Landisville.
