A wonderful way to support the library

Two fundraisers this spring will benefit the Quarryville Library.

The board of trustees will hold a chicken barbecue, plant sale, book sale, and yard sale on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville.

It will be the first time the library will host a yard sale in the spring; one is also held each October.

The chicken barbecue meal, prepared by the Wakefield Lions Club, will include a half-chicken, a bag of chips, and a bottle of water. There will also be whoopie pies for sale.

The plant sale will be held on the library's sidewalk, and the book sale will take place in the Pennington Room. Quarryville Library director Michele Lefler said, "Volunteers go around to local nurseries and ask for donations, so we never know ahead of time what we will have. It's mostly flowers of various kinds. Sometimes there are trees, and occasionally there are vegetables. We just don't know until the day of the event."

The Friends of the Quarryville Library have accepted book donations and expect to have a variety of books available for sale, Lefler said.

"We're excited to welcome everyone for a day of good food, great books, and community spirit," Lefler said. "The chicken barbecue, plant sale, and book sale offers something for everyone, and it's a wonderful way to support the library while having fun."

Proceeds will benefit the library's general fund. "Considering that roughly 70% of our budget has to be raised locally and doesn't come from municipal support, it's very crucial to being able to continue services," Lefler said.

An online auction will be held throughout June to help the library pay for roof repairs. "I don't know the extent of (the work on the roof) we're going to have to get done," Lefler said. "We've had quotes in the past, and it's been kicked down the road as long as it can be kicked down the road. We're going to have to get some updated quotes and see what we need to have done."

The library is soliciting donations of auction items from businesses and individuals. For more information about donating, contact Lefler by email at mlefler@quarryvillelibrary.org.

Information about the auction, including starting bids, photos, and a description of the auction items will be updated on the library's website, http://www.quarryvillelibrary.org.

All of the proceeds from the auction will go to fund work on the library's roof.

The library held a smaller auction in February. "It worked really beautifully," said Lefler. "I said, 'Why not try to do a bigger one later so we have more time to seek donations?' We're hoping it's going to be a big fundraiser for us because we need a new roof, or at least a partially new roof."
