Draggin' Wagons sets spring car show

It is a new adventure for us," said Ray Marvin of the Draggin' Wagons Car Club, who explained that the club will present its annual spring car show on a weeknight rather than a Saturday. "We are trying this mid-week and in the evening for people who are looking for something to do."

This year's event will be held on Wednesday, May 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Honeybrook Gardens, 3940 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. The show will feature all makes and models of classic, antique and custom vehicles, including street rods, muscle cars, antique cars, motorcycles and trucks.

Those who choose to display their vehicles at the upcoming show will be asked to make a registration donation. Registration will take place on the day of the show. There will be no admission fee for spectators, but the club asks that all guests bring nonperishable food items for donation to the Honey Brook Food Pantry.

At the upcoming event, trophy winners will be selected in nontraditional classes such as Chopped and Dropped, Cool Convertible, Cool Commercial, Cool Custom, Great Graphics, Street Sleeper, Hottest Hot Rod, Cool Coupe and more.

The Rollin Spuds food truck will offer dinner items, and ice cream will also be available to purchase. A DJ will play oldies music, and there will an opportunity for attendees to win gift baskets.

"We usually get a car wash basket, a goodie basket, craft baskets, a movie night basket with popcorn and a candy basket with chocolate," said Marvin, noting that baskets will be awarded at the end of the event through a random drawing.

The car club holds two annual shows - one in the spring and another in the fall. Depending on the weather, the shows attract about 80 cars. Last year's fall event was well attended despite the rain.

"At the fall event, it was fair weather, and we got a good turnout - around 60 cars," Marvin said.

Among the cars at the event were a 1955 Packard and a 1967 Volkswagen. "The white '55 Packard is a very rare car. It almost looks like a Studebaker," Marvin said. "The Volkswagen was just restored and picked up from the restoration shop that morning."

Other cars in the fall show included Marvin's 1954 Ford convertible, which he recently drove cross-country along the famous Route 66 along with his wife, Charmaine. Nicknamed "The Mother Road," Route 66 travels through eight states - Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

"We traveled for 28 days, through 13 states, and (drove) 6,400 miles," Marvin shared. "We met hundreds of people on the way. Cruising (along Route 66), the people are happy, friendly people. It brings out the best of people. We had an amazing time."

Proceeds from the upcoming car show will benefit local charities, including Steeple to People Ministries in Honey Brook.

"(Last year), we supplied Christmas dinner for two families and gifts for the children. Normally, they give us a list with names, sizes and children's ages. Last year, they did the shopping for us," Marvin noted.

The Draggin' Wagons Car Club has more than 60 members who meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Honey Brook Lions Club, 14 Mount Pleasant Road, Honey Brook, with the exception of December, when the club holds its annual holiday dinner. At the March meeting, the club members nominate and vote on the nonprofit organizations that they will support in the coming year.

Membership forms and packets of information about the club will be available at the upcoming car show for prospective members.

"We have members from the east side of Lancaster, Morgantown, Honey Brook, Elverson, Downingtown and Coatesville," Marvin pointed out. "We also have a couple people from the Garden Spot area. Most of the original members were from the Honey Brook community."

He emphasized that it is not necessary to own a classic car to become a club member. "It's people who like cars, but it's more of a social club," said Marvin, noting he has been a club member since 2008. "We do activities almost every month. We do a barbecue or a cruise for ice cream or go out to dinner. At the meetings, there will be two or three classic hot rod cars in the parking lot, but it's mostly regular cars."

He added that the club's fall show will be held on Honey Brook Harmony Day, with a date to be determined.
