Celebrating Saturdays in Strasburg Community Park

People talking, really smiling / A man playing guitar / And singing for us all / Will you help him change the world? / Can you dig it? Yes, I can / And I've been waiting such a long time."

The Strasburg Community Parks Foundation is celebrating 10 years of concerts in the amphitheater by bringing back some of its top crowd-drawing acts on four summer Saturday nights.

Sounds of Strasburg Free Concerts will be held at 6:30 p.m. on June 21, July 12, July 26, and Aug. 9 at Strasburg Community Park, 151 Precision Ave., Strasburg.

It is recommended that visitors bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating. No coolers or alcohol will be permitted. If it rains, the concert will be postponed and every effort will be made to reschedule for a future date, said Patti Creighton, a member of the parks foundation board who organizes the events with help from a team of other volunteers.

The series will start with Swing Night on June 21, featuring Flipside Big Band, which is composed of members of the Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band. Instructors will provide dancing lessons, and then Flipside will play a full set.

Local businesses Robino's 717 and Joe on the Go Coffee Co will sell food and beverages.

On July 12, Studio Two, a tribute act of the Beatles, will perform. Studio Two has headlined numerous ticketed shows in New England and tours during the summer. "It's a top-notch, high-quality show that residents can see for free here, which is pretty nice," Creighton said.

Walk-O Taco and Joe on the Go Coffee Co. will be the vendors.

On July 26, Steven Courtney & the Suitcase Musicians will grace the Strasburg Community Park stage. Courtney is a renowned children's musician who hosted a local television show, The Steven Courtney Channel. "The show was entertaining for adults, as well," Creighton said. "I watched it before I had kids."

Creighton noted that Courtney and his band will perform a blended set. "He'll play some children's tunes, so if you bring your kiddos, they'll be entertained, but he also plays old-time rock covers and songs that appeal to people of all ages," she said. "He has a longstanding reputation of being a great entertainer, so we're happy to have him here."

Stoney's Burgers and Fries and Penny's Ice Cream Truck will sell food.

On Aug. 9, award-winning Nashville recording artist The Jess Zimmerman Band will bring its brand of county-rock music. Hailing from Berks County, The Jess Zimmerman Band has played along the NASCAR circuit.

"They're just wonderful, personable, and entertaining," said Creighton.

Gio's Smokin' Grill & Sweet Treats will sell food during the final performance of the season.

Creighton is happy with the star-studded lineup. "We try to reach different interests and hit different genres," she said. "(The concert series has) grown and grown and grown over the years, and it's been wonderful to see."

In addition to donations from community members, Sounds of Strasburg Free Concerts is sponsored by Alere Family Health, Joe on the Go Coffee Co, Red Truck Heating & Cooling, Strasburg Dental Group, Willoughby & Associates Inc., SERVPRO, Strasburg Scooter Tours, Bachman Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, and SoundFocus.

The Strasburg Community Parks Foundation, which is responsible for the upkeep of the park, will accept donations to be used for maintenance.

"Obviously, I am a little biased, but personally, I think live music is one of the best ways to bring a community together," said Creighton, who is a music teacher at Lampeter Elementary School. "Every age group from (toddlers) to people in their 90s can enjoy music in a relaxed atmosphere while the sun is setting. It's a beautiful chance to experience nature and music together, which I think go hand in hand."

"People reaching, people touching / A real celebration / Waiting for us all / If we want it, really want it / Can you dig it? Yes, I can / And I've been waiting such a long time / For the day."
