Wellness Fair Is Designed To Inspire Healthier Choices

The life you save may be your own.

West Hempfield Fire & Rescue will host a Health and Wellness Fair on Wednesday, July 30, from 2 to 7 p.m. at the fire company, 3476 Marietta Ave., Lancaster.

The event will be held rain or shine; it will be moved indoors if the weather is bad.

Tara Moyer, the fire company's event coordinator, said crafters and vendors will sell crochet plushies, 3D-printed items, homemade soaps and body care products, press-on nails, Tastefully Simple products, and more.

Food trucks Spudtacular; Nooners Gourmet Italian Ice, selling hand-dipped ice cream; Daisy's Creations, selling kettle corn; and Fresh Frenchy's Acai will be at the event.

Lancaster General Hospital will hold a blood drive during the event. Walk-ins will be accepted, but registration by calling 717-544-0170 is encouraged.

Moyer said the Health and Wellness Fair is designed to inform the community about local organizations.

"The event promotes awareness, education and access to resources that support a healthy lifestyle," she said. "Wellness checks can help with early detection of health issues. I'm hoping this event will inspire healthier choices to the community by helping to connect those in need with resources they may not be aware of."

Moyer said the following organizations will be at the Health and Wellness Fair: Disability Empowerment Center, which provides assistance for people with disabilities in Lancaster and Lebanon counties; Redemption Wellness Services LLC, which provides healing through a holistic approach and offers mental health counseling, addresses women's concerns, and holds walk talk therapy sessions; Lancaster County Young Marines, a youth program that focuses on teamwork, discipline, leadership, and living a drug-free lifestyle; Lead Free Families of Lancaster County, which helps identify and remediate lead hazards with in-home screenings and health service support; Recovery InSight, which provides support with compassion to individuals working toward recovery by those in recovery with similar experiences; Angels on Call, a home care agency service that offers companionship, medication reminders, homemaking, and personal care; Anchor Lancaster, which offers a wide variety of services, such as case managers for personalized one-on-one care; and Community Action Partnership (CAP) Domestic Violence Crisis Services.

West Hempfield Fire & Rescue will teach fire safety and provide free smoke detectors, one per household, while supplies last.

Penn State Health Life Lion will provide free wellness checks and teach hands-only CPR.

Hempfield recCenter, a community hub offering amenities and programs for people of all ages, will waive the membership activation fee through August for those attending the event, Moyer said.

PA CareerLink, a one-stop shop for job seekers and employers, will educate visitors about a sense of purpose and social connections, which may contribute to better mental and physical health.

Amerihealth will bring its mobile unit with Wii games and activities for children, along with a large selection of health education handouts.

Hand & Stone will offer free chair massages during the event.

West Hempfield Township Police Department will have certified officers who will perform car seat checks and provide car seat safety tips to ensure proper seat installation. Cameron Powers, who will be one of the officers on-site, quickly learned how important the process is just days after earning certification in a four-day course. "I just did it because I wanted to get myself out there and get more certifications under my belt," she said. "I really did learn a lot of different things."

Shortly after completing the training, Powers responded to a call and subsequently spotted a mother improperly placing her child in a car seat. "(The mother) put the seatbelt over top of the car seat," Powers recalled. "And I paused, and I said, 'Hey, I'm going to redo your car seat. And I had to redo the harnessing and all of that. I was able to fix her car seat, and she was able to calm down. She thanked me, and it made me feel like this really does mean something to a community because some people don't know how to do that."
