ELANCO Library Posts Programs

The Eastern Lancaster County (ELANCO) Library, 11 Chestnut Drive, New Holland, will offer events and programs to the community. Registration is not required unless noted. For details, visit http://www.elancolibrary.org or contact 717-354-0525 or adagostino@elancolibrary.org.

The library will offer free ice cream to the first 75 people who register for a new library card in October. Those who sign up will receive a free scoop of ice cream at Fox Meadows Creamery.

The library offers various activities regularly. In October, these will include Music and Movement, for children from birth to age 6 with a parent or caregiver, on Mondays at 10:30 a.m.; Readers' Roundtable Book Discussion on Monday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m.; Hooks and Needles Yarn Craft Club, for people of all ages who knit or crochet, on Monday, Oct. 13, at 6:30 p.m.; and Lego Creation Club on Thursday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m.

The library will also offer Preschool Storytime, for children ages 4 to 6, on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. and Toddler Thursdays, for children from birth to age 3, on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. Siblings are welcome to join.

Children of all ages accompanied by a parent or caregiver may read aloud to Pepper the Labrador retriever during Read Aloud with Pepper the Dog! on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m.

Sallie Gregory from Lancaster County Conservation District will present Get Nosey about Nature: Streams & Rivers on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 10:30 a.m. Children will hear the story "Mel Fell" by Corey Tabor and then explore the parts of the food chain that make a stream healthy today and for the future.

Gregory will also present Get Nosey about Nature: Compost Stew on Oct. 13 at 10:30 a.m. Children will hear the story "Compost Stew" by Mary McKenna Siddals and then help create compost for next year's flower garden.

Sign & Sing with Darla Blair from Music for Everyone will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 10:30 a.m. Blair will sing children's folk songs and teach American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary signs with the songs. Audience participation is highly encouraged.

Medicare Counseling provided by Pennsylvania Medicare Education and Decision Insight (PA MEDI) will be offered on Thursday, Oct. 16, from 1 to 6 p.m. PA MEDI counselors will be available to provide information to older adults in Lancaster County on their current Medicare coverage, how to join, and more. Registration is required, and people should call 717-299-7979 to schedule an appointment.

Writing and Human Creativity in the Age of Generative Artificial Intelligence will be presented by A. Nicole Pfannenstiel on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. Pfannenstiel will discuss how AI produces the texts it provides, the role of human creativity in writing, and how to use technological tools effectively to supplement human creation in school and in everyday life. The program will include a question-and-answer period.

A New StoryWalk Book Walkthrough will take place on Monday, Oct. 20, at 11 a.m. From late September to late December, the book in the StoryWalk will be "Tidy" by Emily Gravett. Attendees will meet outside the library to follow the StoryWalk path and read the book together.

An Envelope Design Workshop with Sandra Sanders will take place on Wednesdays, Oct. 22 and 29, at 2 p.m. This workshop will instruct participants on how to use the many patterns found on the inside of common security envelopes and other routinely discarded paper to create intricate landscapes, abstract art, botanical collages, cityscapes, and more. Participants are expected to participate in both sessions; they will draft a project during the first session and complete it during the second session. Registration is required, and all materials will be provided. The workshop is for adults.

Pumpkin Painting will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 2 p.m. Attendees can paint a pumpkin to take home, and supplies will be provided. Registration is required.

A Folded Book Art Class will take place on Monday, Oct. 27, at 2 p.m. Jeannette Kolb, a longtime library volunteer and book artist, will introduce the craft, display some of her work, demonstrate basic techniques, and get attendees started on their own creation. Attendees will learn to transform unwanted books into works of art. All supplies will be provided, and registration is required. The workshop is for adults.
