Famous Mathematician To Give Presentation

Millersville University will host Arthur Benjamin for a presentation titled "Mathemagics!" at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6, in the multipurpose room in the Student Memorial Center, 21 S. George St., Millersville. Benjamin is the Smallwood Family professor of mathematics at Harvey Mudd College and the visiting professor for public outreach at the National Museum of Mathematics.

An acclaimed educator and researcher, Benjamin is internationally recognized for his ability to make mathematics engaging and accessible. He has been repeatedly honored by the Mathematical Association of America for his teaching and writing and was selected by Princeton Review as one of the Best 300 Professors in America. He is also a professional magician and one of the world's fastest mental calculators, as well as a grandmaster in backgammon who is in the American Backgammon Hall of Fame.

Benjamin has given three TED Talks, which have been viewed over 50 million times. He has demonstrated and explained his calculating talents to audiences around the world and has appeared on numerous television programs to promote the beauty and power of numbers. He has been featured in Scientific American; Omni; Discover; People; Esquire; The New York Times; Los Angeles Times; and Reader's Digest, which calls him "America's Best Math Whiz."

Benjamin's talk is part of the 39th annual Brossman Foundation and Ronald E. Frisbie Sr. Science Lectureship Program at Millersville University, sponsored by the Mr. and Mrs. William F. Brossman Charitable Foundation. The program includes a competitive examination for high school science, mathematics, and technology students; laboratory demonstrations; a special afternoon lecture for selected elementary and middle school students; and an evening presentation by Benjamin.
