Library Posts January Activities

Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, will offer a variety of special events and programming in January. All programs are free, unless stated otherwise, and require preregistration. For more information and to register, visit http://www.mslibrary.org or call 717-653-1510.

The public is invited to the annual Donegal Student Art Show on Saturday, Jan. 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students from a variety of grades will submit artwork for display, and some artists will be present to discuss their work. There is no cost to attend.

Programs for children and families will include Reading with Sasha, a KPets therapy dog, Thursdays, from 5 to 7 p.m. (15-minute time slots are available); Wiggle and Giggle Story Time, Mondays, Jan. 12 and 26, at 10:30 a.m. and Saturday, Jan. 24, at 10 a.m. for children ages 6 months through 2 years; Family Story time with Miss Alyssa, Wednesdays, Jan. 7, 14, 21 and 28, at 10:30 a.m.; Family Story Time with Miss Katelyn, Thursdays, Jan. 8, 15, 22 and 29, at 10:30 a.m.; and Curious Minds Story Time, led by a member of the Janus School team, Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 10:30 a.m.

Choose Your Own Adventure story time will take place on Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. At this interactive story time, listeners will choose where the story goes, with a choice of multiple endings.

Teen Chill & Draw with Hanna will be offered on Saturday, Jan. 10, at 1 p.m. Teens who like to draw or want to learn are invited to the program. Local teen artist Hanna will give some tips, and the library will provide supplies, or teens can bring their own.

Preschool Pals is a new monthly program designed to help children ages 3 to 6 prepare for kindergarten readiness through social emotional learning, literacy and communication. Each week, there will be a letter and a word of the week; children will practice sounding out the letter and writing it. The group will read a book, do a group activity and make a craft based on the theme. Families will be given take-home packets to continue practicing. This program will meet on the second and fourth Tuesdays each month. For January, Preschool Pals will take place on Tuesdays, Jan. 13 and 27, at 10:30 a.m.

Little Tinker Thinkers, a a new monthly STEAM-based program, will take place on Jan. 13 at 2:30 p.m. for youths age 6 and older. Kids will learn about science, engineering, art and math through fun hands-on activities.

Harry Potter Night will take place on Thursday, Jan. 22, at 6 p.m. Attendees will create an edible potion, and children will be sorted into their Hogwarts house and paint and design their own magic wands. Other themed activities will be featured, and there will be Harry Potter snacks and drinks to enjoy.

Miss Alyssa is having a Snuggle Up Family Story Time on Jan. 8 at 6 p.m. Children can wear their pajamas (optional) and bring a favorite stuffed animal.

On Fun Fort Friday, set for Friday, Jan. 9, families may come to the library while it is closed and build a reading fort among the shelves and tables. Attendees should bring blankets or sheets, a flashlight and a drink; the library will provide clips to hang sheets for forts and will offer a snack.

A Family Lego Challenge will be featured on Jan. 13 at 6 p.m. Miss Alyssa will give each participating family a shoebox full of Legos. The challenge will be to use what is given to create based on the night's theme.

Activities for adults will include Closely Knit, a program for knitters and crocheters, on Jan. 12 and 26 at 1 p.m., with no registration necessary; Adult Book Bingo, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m.; Joyful Stitchers Cross-Stitch Club, for people of all skill levels, on Saturday, Jan. 17, from 9:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.; and Book Discussion Group - Lit Lovers, Jan. 27, at 6:30 p.m., with the topic of "The Frozen River" by Ariel Lawhon.

Easy Writer Club, for writers of all levels, will meet on Jan. 21 at 6:30 p.m. No registration is required.

Adult Book Bingo and Adult Game Night will be held on Jan. 21. Bingo will start at 2 p.m.; game night, with a variety of board games and card games, will start at 5 p.m.

Living Well with Arthritis, presented by Adam Domovich, a local physical therapist working out of Resolute Physical Therapy, will be offered on Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. He will discuss ways to live well with arthritis and knee pain.

Reading the World will be offered on Jan. 8 at 1:30 p.m. Families can pretend to fly to the country of the week and have their "passports" stamped. There will be a short presentation about the country the group is "visiting," with stories or folklore and a craft based in that country.

The library hosts a Quilt Study every other month in the large program room where quilt enthusiasts gather to look over featured quilts and discuss stitching, patterns and its history. The next scheduled event will be on Jan. 14 at 12:30 p.m.

A program on Hygge & Joy Journaling will be offered on Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. Attendees will discover the Danish art of hygge - finding comfort and contentment in simple moments - while learning about joy journaling with guest speaker Julie Delich. The evening will feature writing and relaxing in a calm, candlelit atmosphere with warm beverages.

Community members are welcome to attend the library's board meeting on Jan. 12 at 6:30 p.m.

The library will be closed on Monday, Jan. 19.

Gently used books and media can be donated to the self-service shed behind the library on Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
