The Magic of "Frozen" Will Melt Hearts

Celebrate love, sisterhood and friendship when the magic of "Disney's Frozen: The Broadway Musical" comes to the stage at Elizabethtown Area High School. The show will be performed at 7 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 26 to 28, with an additional show at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Shows will be performed in the auditorium of the high school, 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown.

Based on the Disney film, "Frozen" tells the story of sisters Elsa and Anna as they navigate love, fear and the unbreakable bond of family. Audiences will hear iconic songs such as "Let It Go," "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" and "For the First Time in Forever," along with music written specifically for the stage version.

Portraying well-known and beloved characters has been fun but challenging, cast members said.

"There is a little bit more pressure because you want to portray that same character, but at the same time, I'm trying to dig deeper into her actual feelings and thoughts and trying to portray more of her emotions while everything happens to her," shared Makayla Weaver, a senior who plays Elsa.

For senior Josephine Sirinides, who portrays Anna, the role is a dream come true.

"Back in 2019, 'Frozen Jr.' was the first musical I was ever in," she said, noting that she regularly gets comments from people saying she shares Anna's personality in real life. "This has been a dream role of mine ever since I started doing theater. ... I'm very confident in embodying such an iconic character because I'm so similar to her already and I've spent so much time admiring this character and looking up to this character."

A few of the actors will be working on stage with puppets that were created by students.

"I'm playing my character as a puppet that's attached to my body," said Evelyn Kopp, a junior who portrays Olaf. "It's also usually a male actor playing Olaf, so that's a little different than what people may be used to seeing. It's been a struggle to portray someone who is so iconic and that people are going to still be able to recognize is the same character."

As Kristoff, junior Calvin Binkle will also work alongside a furry co-star, with senior Jacqui Anderton inside the costume portraying the reindeer Sven.

"Kristoff is the main good guy but it's also tricky because at the beginning, he's kind of a jerk," Calvin said. "Portraying a likeable jerk is something I've found a little hard, but it's also fun."

Freshman Ben Creason is excited to step into his first role in the production when he portrays Hans.

"My character is a little bit difficult because he's an infamous character," he said. "All the kids watching already know what's going to happen. Some of the new songs that were added to the show, a bunch of those are my songs, so I have to build the character they see in the movie, but I also have to portray a different character than what they're expecting. It's a little bit difficult, but I'm excited to see how it plays out."

For Calvin, the role represents his first time in the spotlight.

"I've been part of the tech crew since middle school, but my friends encouraged me to try out for this show," he said. "I've had a really good experience so far, and it's been a lot of fun."

The students noted that audiences can expect to see a visual spectacle, complete with elaborate costumes, sets and staging.

"We're collaborating with Messick's Farm Equipment, and they do a light show every year," said Evelyn. "Their son is on tech, so they're going to be helping us with lights around the stage, so when Elsa uses magic, it will light up."

Overall, the cast members are excited to bring a classic story to life on stage.

"It's such a sweet story," Josephine said. "It's about love, not necessarily romantic love, although that's included, but family love. It's a story of building a family with more than just your sister and learning how to love."

And it's a story that audiences should connect with, especially the students' peers, said Josephine.

"This movie came out when I was in kindergarten, so for kids who are now in high school, this was a big part of our lives growing up," she said. "I think the musical adds so much more depth to those iconic characters, and the audience will love getting to know more about them."
