Book Bargains Await at Library Sale

If you're looking to fill your home library but not break the bank, make plans to visit the Friends of the Elizabethtown Public Library's Spring Book Sale.

The book sale will be held from Tuesday, March 24, through Saturday, March 28, in the lower level of the library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. Tuesday will be a preview day from 2 to 7 p.m., with a small admission charge for nonmembers of the Friends group; Friends members will be admitted for free. Admission is free for the remaining days of the sale. Hours on Wednesday, March 25, through Friday, March 27, will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Hours on Saturday will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"Friday ... is the first day of the fill-a-bag sale days," shared Terri Dorwart, book sale co-chair. "We provide a generously sized bag, and you fill it for (one price)." The fill-a-bag sale will continue on Saturday for an even lower price, she said.

"The Friends of the E-town Library only sponsor book sales twice a year, so don't miss this opportunity to explore a wide range of titles and find amazing deals!" Dorwart said. "We have more than 10,000 books, and with five days of sales there are pricing options for everyone - adult, young adult, children's, hardbacks, paperbacks, trades, fiction and nonfiction, history, biographies, a favorite authors section, cookbooks, art and craft books, romances, coffee table books, vintage books and sets."

A wide variety of CDs and DVDs will also be for sale.

"This year we'll also have sheet music, guitar books, games and puzzles," Dorwart remarked.

Proceeds from the sale benefit operations of the library. Because the funds are unrestricted, the money supports in a wide variety of ways, including funding programming for people of all ages. This year, funds from the book sale are especially important, library staff members said, because the library recently stopped passport services and lost that stream of income.

"The Friends of the E-town Library Spring Book Sale is one of the largest and longest independent public library book sales in the area," Dorwart said. "In addition ... the Friends bookstore, which operates year-round on the main floor of the library, will also be open. With each purchase at the book sale, customers will receive a 15% off coupon for the bookstore, which can be used immediately."

She also invited shoppers to pick up a snack or beverage in the coffee shop located within the library and to make a day of it in Elizabethtown.

"With our convenient downtown location, visitors can shop at the sale, grab a latte and visit one of E-town's many specialty shops all within walking distance of the library," she said.

Dorwart noted that the Friends are taking a new approach to the sale this year.

"A new team has taken over the responsibility for planning and running the book sales and are bringing some fresh ideas and enthusiasm to the table," she commented. "You'll see streamlined pricing and checkout. We'll continue our favorite author sections, offer children's and adult book sets and book bundles at special prices and have a vintage book table."

She noted that the Friends group is always seeking new members and that people can stop by the bookstore to fill out a membership form or become a member at the book sale. Membership includes admission to the preview days of both sales and a discount on purchases year-round in the bookstore.

"Membership runs from January to December, so if you plan on attending both sales and want free admission to both preview days, now is the time to join," Dorwart said. "If you are interested in volunteering, there are a number of ways to help. Volunteers might sort through book donations, stock the bookstore shelves or work in the bookstore and/or at the sale. In the warmer months, volunteers maintain and nurture the garden and courtyard area located in the rear of the library."

Entry to the library is from the back of the building, where there is free parking available in a lot. For more information, visit https://etownpubliclibrary.org.
