Jazz for a Cause

Come out to Christ Church United Church of Christ (UCC) on Friday, April 10, and enjoy a concert for a community cause. The church will host a performance by After Hours, a jazz, pop and R&B band, at 7 p.m. The concert will be held at the church, 247 S. Market St., Elizabethtown.

The concert is free to attend, but donations will be received to benefit Threads & Treads, a program that supplies new shoes and clothing to students in need in the Elizabethtown Area School District (EASD).

The program, titled "Jazz Standards Through the Ages," will feature jazz pieces from various decades, starting in the 1920s with New Orleans Dixieland. Other decades and styles will include the swing era of the 1930s and 1940s, bebop, hard bop, cool bop and some 1970s fusion. There will be some discussion between songs to highlight the basics of jazz and note differences between each decade's style. Songs will include "Take the A Train," "Four," "Pent Up House" and "All Blues."

Members of After Hours include Michael Dobson on keyboards, John Lantz on bass, David Devonshire on drums and Chris Hynum on saxophone.

Hynum is a member of Christ Church, said Nadinne Ziegler, who is on the Threads & Treads committee.

"Each year, our church selects an outreach mission monthly to receive donations," she explained. "April is designated for Threads & Treads, and so the committee each year selects a musician to perform a concert that month to highlight Threads & Treads and allow the community to be aware of our mission and given the opportunity to enjoy the music and make a donation if they desire."

Threads & Treads began in 2024 after a group of friends brainstormed ways to help the community. The group members learned that shoes and clothing were especially needed for families in the Elizabethtown Area School District, and the first event to benefit the cause was held in July of that year.

Since then, the organization has continued to grow.

"In just over two years this program has already proven to be a success in filling a real need in the community," said Dave Andrick, a member of the Threads & Treads committee. "We have quotes on the Threads & Treads website from EASD staff saying 'This program has been a game-changer for our district.'"

Ziegler encouraged people to come out to the concert, noting that it's a night of free entertainment with free refreshments provided after the concert, and it's a great way to support local students.

"All proceeds from Threads & Treads are used to purchase clothing, shoes and other basic needs for economically disadvantaged students in the Elizabethtown Area School District," she said. "Through this community-school collaboration, we are providing a stable foundation for learning and overall well-being."

Tickets are not required to attend the concert. Threads & Treads will host its annual community event on Saturday, July 18.
