My Childhood Christmas

As a young girl my family was poor, but we always received 1 gift at Christmas. The boys got a truck or toy gun, the girls got a doll. As we got older the boys got a shirt and the girls got a blouse. We were delighted with new clothes.

On Christmas Eve, after all 8 of the kids were in bed, Mom and Dad would decorate the tree. When we got up in the morning we had to eat breakfast before we could open our 1 gift.

At church there was always a Christmas program that we had to learn a part to say. It was about the birth of Jesus. After the program was over we got an orange and a small box of candy. We were delighted.

Being 83 years old I look back to when Christmas was about Jesus’s birth. Now its about gifts. How sad.
