Botany for Gardeners

May 20

It’s easy to look at our gardens and see the neat, ordered (or sometimes chaotic) assortment of plants that we’ve chosen to cultivate for food or beauty - and it’s easy to get caught up in the day to day cycles of planting, maintenance, and harvest. But it is very helpful to occasionally step back, look at the whole picture and begin to understand the inner workings of how each plant fits (or sometimes doesn’t) into the system.

The plants we are growing are complex, interconnected organisms that grow and exist for reasons all their own. Understanding how these plants fit into the greater context of plant families and ecologies, and having a grasp of their inner workings can help us to understand why they do what they do and how we may guide them for the best results.

In this introduction to botany, through a gardeners lens, we explore their inner workings, cycles of growth and reproduction, and delve into the primary plant families of the vegetable garden. This class will be part classroom, part field-walk. Bring notebooks and dress for the weather and walking.
