Power Tools 2.0: Intro to Carpentry
Jul 13-14, 2024
In this weekend-long course, you’ll gain an introduction to power tools and carpentry through collaboratively building a chicken coop from scratch.
Class will take place from 9am to 4:30pm on Saturday, July 13th and Sunday, July 14th. In order to attend this class, you must plan to join for both days!
You’ll have the opportunity to read plans, review measuring and marking, and practice cutting wood using a circular saw and a mitre saw. You will also learn basic wall-framing layout for a small structure, and learn how to cut sheet goods accurately and safely.
As we assemble this structure, we'll have discussions about design considerations when building custom projects like this on our own. If you are thinking about taking your basic knowledge to the next level, or gaining more flight time using power tools in a safe and supportive environment, this course is for you!
We hope you can join us to affirm the joy and empowerment of building from scratch in a community setting!--an antidote to our fast-paced culture of outsourced builds and disposable designs.
Perks: As a bonus, attendees have the option to take home their own speed square and carpenter's pencil for future projects. Attendees who do not wish to keep these items can leave them with the Horn Farm Center for later building classes.
What to bring:
Measuring tape (extras are available to borrow for those who need)
Sturdy, closed-toe shoes
Clothing suitable for moderate physical work with power tools.
Lunch & snacks (fridge and microwave available)
A notebook and writing utensil (for note-taking)
Any questions you may have about personal projects or project ideas.
What we're providing: (attendees are welcome to bring their own if they have these items)
Safety goggles
Ear protection
Speed squares and carpenter's pencils
A fun and informative experience working with power tools!
NOTE: No prior experience is required to join this course. We'll cover the basics of tool technique and safety throughout the build. Participation in the Horn Farm Center's Intro to Power Tools course is NOT required to join this program. If you are seeking more ground-level practice with power tools for home improvements and small projects, consider signing up for our next Intro to Power Tools class on Sunday, June 23rd. Intro to Power Tools focuses specifically on tool applications and practice; it does not include a take-home project or collaborative structure build.
