100 and Fabulous

In June, Nina "Claire" Reese and Marian Soutner celebrated their birthdays, each wearing a sash that summed up both women perfectly. It read, "100 and Fabulous."

Claire and Marian, both residents of Juniper Village at Mount Joy, marked their 100th birthdays in May. They were treated to a party a few weeks later at the retirement community, complete with a big cake bearing their names, jumbo-size birthday cards, sparkling crowns to wear and lots of good wishes from residents who sang "Happy Birthday."

Claire was born May 22, 1925, in Hazlehurst, Ga. She fondly remembers summers spent swimming in the lake and a childhood without television, where outdoor activities were daily delights.

"I loved fishing or reading books," Claire recalled. As a young woman, she found joy in swing dancing; proudly graduated from high school; and became known for her talents as a seamstress, cook and baker.

She was married to William C. Reese Jr. (known as Bill) for 53 years before his death in 1998. Together they had three children, four grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Now at 100, Claire enjoys the simple pleasures of life, reading her favorite novel, "Gone with the Wind"; listening to music; and enjoying fresh air.

When asked what she is most proud of while reflecting on her century of life, she immediately answered, "My family."

She also offered advice to younger generations, including treasuring a strong family support system and to always "be on your good behavior."

Marian was born on May 3, 1925, and grew up in Marysville, Pa., during the Great Depression. She remembers the frugality of those times, noting, "I would never have asked my father for a five-cent candy," even though candy remains her favorite treat.

A lifelong volunteer and music lover, Marian played piano at her church's Sunday school and found fulfillment in giving back through the Silver Spring Ambulance & Rescue Association and her church. She worked for the federal government for more than 35 years and later became the secretary of the local chapter of the Federal Retirees Association. She was married to Herman K. Soutner, a World War II veteran who passed away in 1992. They have two children, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Marian's favorite book is the Bible, and she finds joy in church hymns and memories of growing blueberries in her yard. When asked about the key to longevity, she shared, "Volunteering and being a part of the WCTU - Woman's Christian Temperance Union."

Marian was also featured in a special oral history project by the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library in Mechanicsburg, sharing her experience as a woman during World War II. To read the story, visit https://bit.ly/4eJjPXy.
