4-H Beef Club announces summer show results

The Chester County 4-H Beef Club participated in the summer show on June 10. Members exhibited commercial and Angus heifers, as well as three weight classes of steers.

Members readied their animals for the show by washing and fitting the cattle under direction from leaders and alumni. Not only did members compete in the summer show, but they also received tips for handling and showing techniques from alumna Caitlyn Fairbairn of Lisnageer Farm in Coatesville.

Judge Kim Doran of Hereford County, Md., placed the cattle presented during the show. The Senior Showmanship results had Olivia Macomber in first place, Emma Uhlman in second place and Xavier Reith in third place.

In the First Year Showmanship division, awards went to Ridan Kerner for first place, Gretchen McCafferty for second place and Maddie Kulp for third place.

Gretchen took first place and Grand Champion for January Heifers in the Commercial Heifer category. In the Commercial Heifers/February category, Gretchen took first place and Reserve Champion, and Maddie took second place. Maddie also took first place for the Commercial Heifers/April category.

The Angus Heifer category saw Olivia take first place and Grand Champion for February Heifers. Emma placed first and received Grand Champion for Prospect Steers.

In the Market Steer category, Xavier was awarded first place and Grand Champion for Lightweight Steers. For Heavyweight Steers, Emma took first place and Reserve Grand Champion, while Ridan placed second.

The Pennsylvania 4-H Program educates youths about the care, management and marketing of beef animals and gives them opportunities to develop skills such as record-keeping, goal-setting, responsibility and sportsmanship. Practicing best management while raising an animal gives members the opportunity to engage in science-based, hands-on education.
