Pioneer Track Teams Handle Visiting Solanco

With a handful of personal records and some sweeping performances, the Pioneer track teams defeated visiting Solanco last Monday. Depth was key for the boys who swept the mile, 400 and 800 meter runs in a 101.5 - 48-5 victory and kept their record unblemished at 4-0.

Teagan Weaver, under 11.0 for the first time this year, won the 100 (10.93), 200, long and triple jumps while Colin Whitaker led the mile sweep, with Nate Eberly and Ben Devine, and won the 3200.

Luka Vranich, Arik Harnish and Marty Brenneman secured the 400 while Harnish, Vranich and Cooper Honert took care of the 800. Harnish and Vranich also joined Brenneman and Aidan Black to win the 4x400 relay while Whitker, Black, Riley Wissler and Ben Devine handled the 4x800.

Christian Otto chipped in with a winning PR in the 300 hurdles.

In the field, Elijah Carr won the discus and was second in the javelin and shot put. Zach Shelly won the shot and Luke Wiley and Aidan Wiley went 1-2 in the pole vault.

The girls showed their depth in the relays and moved to 2-2 with a 92-58 victory. Tori Heiserman, Aubrey Magagna, Tonna Harnish and Jaclyn Martin opened with a 4x800 win and Heiserman and Harnish joined forces with Jesse Salgado and Madison Malcom to win the 4x400.

Completing the sweep was Madison Weichler, Elly Bruner, Katelyn Finn and Lyndi Wall in the 4x100.

Malcolm also won both hurdle events and Wall won the 200 and was second in the 100, both with PR's and Magagna claimed the mile.

In the field, Brunner's PR led a long jump sweep with Heiserman and Sabrina Phillips following. She also won the high jump.

Maggie Swarr earned a first place PR in the javelin and was second in the shot (PR) and discus.

GIRLS' LACROSSE

Despite a crushing 22-3 performance over Penn Manor Friday, April 16, the girls' lacrosse team found itself in a tie with the Comets as both teams settled in with 5-4 records overall.

As for the game itself, L-S scored its first goal in the first 30 seconds and poured in ten more in the opening half for an 11-zip lead at the break. L-S continued to dominate play, outscoring the hosts 11-3 and earning their fourth section win of the season.

Jeslyn Krebs and Rowan Kimmel both racked up five goals each. Kimmel also assisted five times and Krebs twice. Hannah Gawne (4g, 1a), Riley Dawson (3g), Kelliann Drummond (2g, 3a), Kelly Hostetter (2g, 1a) and Malaina Bauson (1g) rounded out the scoring.

"While we feel good heading into the second half of the season, and we have shown tremendous resiliency coming off some hard-fought losses, we are not satisfied with our overall performance," said head coach Marshall Krebs.

"Penn Manor was an important game. They were ahead of us in the standings," Krebs continued. "We came out fast and strong and I was able to rotate girls in early."

In non-league play last Monday, the Pioneers poured in a season-high 24 goals and gave up just two in a lopsided win over Red Lion. It was the fourth time in five games that L-S has scored 20 or more goals.

Kimmel dominated the scoring with seven goals. Cissne (4g, 4a) and Gawne (3g, 2a) followed while Krebs (2g, 2a), Dawson (2g), Drummond (2g, 1a), Hostetter (2g) and Olivia Poley (2g, 1a) rounded out a balanced attack.

BASEBALL

For the first time this season, L-S dropped two games in a row. Two days after a 6-0 loss to Warwick, the Pioneers fell short, 8-5, against Cedar Crest.

Despite leading 3-0 and 5-1, L-S gave up seven runs over the fifth and sixth innings.

Jake Long was the big hitter of the day, going 3-4 with one RBI. Caleb Guyer was 2-3.

Crossover play continued last Monday where L-S righted the ship with a 6-3 final over visiting Penn Manor. Andrew Whitehead's grand slam in the fourth erased a 3-2 deficit and sealed Penn Manor's fate. Owen Fikkert was the only two hit batter of the day.

Peyton Harsh and Jason Long combined for eight strikeouts and two walks and gave up four hits.

Wednesday, despite holding a 5-3 lead, the Pioneers gave up three runs in the bottom of the sixth and suffered a difficult 6-5 loss to Manheim Township. Braedon Karpathios went 2-3 with an RBI.

TENNIS

With three games left in the regular season, the Pioneers earned its first shutout Friday, April 16 with a dominating effort over a 1-11 Garden Spot squad.

Weston Weaver teamed with Jack Harnish in this one and the Pioneer duo outlasted their opponents 8-4 while Andrew Reidenbaugh and Kyle Turner won 8-0 and Alex Vaziri and K Pawson settled for an 8-1 result leaving L-S a 3-0 advantage heading into singles.

Weaver won his first match of the year at No. 1 dumping Nate Vreeland 6-2, 6-1 and the rest of the Pioneers, Reidenbaugh, Turner and Vaziri also won in straight sets.

After earning two one-point wins over the last three games, L-S saw the tables reversed in last Monday's 4-3 loss to Cocalico. While Reidenbaugh and Turner and Vaziri and Teaman gave L-S a 2-1 lead after doubles, the Eagles rallied through singles play winning three of four to steal a victory. Reidenbaugh's 6-4, 6-4 win was Lampeter's final point.

BOYS' LACROSSE

With a game-high six goals from Stewart McClain and another five from Conner Nolt, L-S built a 10-0 first quarter advantage and never looked back in a dominating 17-2 win over Bishop McDevitt Friday, April 16.

Zach Labreque notched a hat trick in both goals and assists while Barrett Denlinger (2g, 1a) and Collin Sullivan (1g, 1a) rounded out the goal scorers.

Lampeter's 18-5 win over Garden Spot last Tuesday moved L-S to the top of Section Two at 4-1.

Labreque (2a) was the top scorer with seven goals. Sullivan (5g, 1a), McClain (4g), Denlinger (1g, 2a), Barber (1g) and Filius (2a) also contributed as L-S powered in five goals in each of the first three quarters.

SOFTBALL

After a 1-0 win over Warwick, the Pioneers got back to their dominating ways. Friday, April 16 they pounded out 11 hits and took advantage of five errors in a lopsided 12-1 victory over Cedar Crest.

After a scoreless first, L-S crossed six second inning runs and never looked back. They scored in two of the next three innings and ended the game after five innings.

Kieva Middleton, with seven strikeouts and two walks, gave up just two hits as the undefeated Pioneers improved to 8-1 overall.

Monday's road trip to Penn Manor was a battle of undefeated section leaders. L-S fought from behind after giving up five fourth inning runs but then matched that effort in the sixth, pulling out a 7-5 thriller. A Blantz grand slam, her second this season, erased a 5-2 deficit and gave the visitors the lead for good.

Middleton struck out 11, walked four and scattered eight hits, three more than L-S managed. Brooke Zuber went 3-4. Her second double gave L-S a 2-0 lead in the third inning.

The girls remained perfect in league play with an 11-1, six inning win over visiting Manheim Township Wednesday. The Pioneers pounded out 11 hits and took advantage of three walks and five errors to pull away.
