Girls' Lax Earns L-L League Playoff Berth
A 12-4 regular season performance earned the Lady Bucks lacrosse team a ticket to the L-L Tournament for the first time since 2010, where the semifinal clash went 20-4 in favor of Manheim Township and ended the Bucks' playoff pursuit.
CV's leading scorer, Abby Morley, netted all four Buckskin goals in the contest played at Ephrata, while Allyson Stauffer gathered seven saves in goal.
"The girls played as hard as they could. I'm so proud of CV girls lacrosse for getting to the league semi-finals," praised coach Matt Brubaker.
In their last regular season showdown, the Lady Bucks topped LCD/Lancaster Catholic 13-8 on May 6th.
Morley powered the offense with nine goals, and the remaining tallies were made by Annika Bredeman who had two, and one apiece from Bella Silvaggio and Amanda Yingling. Keeper Jamie Handwerger collected four saves.
"I feel fortunate to be on the sideline with such an exceptional group," Brubaker went on to say.
And the work isn't done just yet, as the team prepares for a District III playoff run in the coming weeks.
BOYS' LACROSSE
After a 12-5 regular season that held only two league losses, CV boys lacrosse also earned a L-L playoff berth for the first time in over 10 years. Though they were dealt a 15-4 loss by Hempfield in the semifinal round, the club has plenty to celebrate.
"Getting to the tournament was our goal all year," noted head coach Nick DiPiano. "The team did an awesome job taking care of business during each step in the process."
The opening round pitted the Bucks against Hempfield, the reigning champs from the 2019 season, and the contest, played at Cocalico, had plenty of unknowns as the two teams did not meet in the regular season.
"We came out to a hot start scoring 13 seconds into the game," praised DiPiano, "But ultimately fell short in some areas and that ended up being the difference."
Zach Fisher provided three of CV's goals and the fourth came from Jeff Fisher, with Tyson Zwaska adding an assist.
The squad's final regular season contest was a 13-6 win over LCD/ Lancaster Catholic on May 6th.
Z. Fisher notched four goals and one assist, while Keller Dillman and J. Fisher each supplied three goals. Dillman matched his goal count with a trio of assists, and Hunter Silvaggio netted two goals and one came from Conrad Dillman.
Benjamin Nolt provided 11 saves as keeper in the final two contests.
VOLLEYBALL
A 3-0 blanking of Manheim Township on May 12th sealed a third-place finish for the Buckskins in Section I, just behind co-champs Warwick and Hempfield.
The Wednesday match featured 11 kills from both Jayden Rice and Sawyer Shertzer, with Dominic Brabant dishing 36 assists. Charles Janvrin fired five aces in the swift victory (25-10, 25-17, 25-11).
The home match also served as senior night, honoring Brabant, Janvrin, Shertzer, and Adam Yoder.
On Monday the 10th, CV battled with Warwick making each set close, but eventually fell 3-0, (25-21, 25-22, 25-16).
Brabant put up 23 assists and 10 digs while Shertzer supplied 10 kills, and Rice had three blocks.
The Bucks powered past Cedar Crest 3-0 on May 6th to grab their seventh league win (25-16, 27-25, 25-16).
Shertzer spearheaded the attack with 13 kills and seven aces, and Brabant provided 32 assists
SOFTBALL
Injuries and quarantines interfered with much of the Buckskin softball season, never allowing a full starting nine to be available in any one contest, but that didn't stop the girls from pushing, progressing, and improving over the duration of their season.
"I can tell you when a team faces that much adversity throughout an entire season, it builds character," pointed out head coach Dennis Ryan. "I appreciate their flexibility and willingness to step up to the plate, and by the end of the season we're playing better, faster, and stronger as a unit."
A little glimpse of that was showcased in CV's 17-1 May 7th win over Lebanon.
Becca Hartranft slammed a three-run homer in the first inning of the runaway win, scoring teammates Ashley Cirilo and Lexi Weitzel.
The Bucks, with just two hits, needed just two at bats to collect their 17 runs, with Payton Stoeckl supplying the other hit as well as earning the win in the circle.
Stoeckl pitched all three innings, fanning four Lebanon batters while allowing just one walk and one run.
The victory marked the Lady Bucks third league triumph.
CV will say goodbye to four seniors after this season - Anya Ditzler, Olivia Mellinger, Stoeckl, and Weitzel, with each known for their specific strengths.
"We will miss the big bats and steady throw from third and shortstop," Ryan said of Weitzel and Mellinger. The coach went on to point out "the experienced, calm and levelheaded arm from Payton and powerful presence and swing from Anya."
BASEBALL
The Bucks registered a 6-1 win over Lebanon on May 7th, posting a four-run second inning to pull away early.
Sam Thompson had a big day for CV, earning the win on the hill throwing all seven innings, striking out three, and also leading the day at the plate with two hits and two RBIs.
Logan Kline also had two hits, with remaining hits coming from Owen Fisher, Connor Esbenshade, Titus York, and Hayden Hartranft.
The club will graduate five seniors at the conclusion of the 2021 season, and Coach Matt Werts was quick to point out the contributions and strengths while honoring each one.
Darren Burkholder led the team in RBIs, and Gavin Fisher held the team's best batting average and a 13-strikout game against Lancaster Mennonite. Logan Kline was the season hit leader and a pitching force, Ethan Weaver was known for his infield versatility and led in extra base hits, and Hayden Hartranft provided a steady and valuable outfield presence.
