Golfers Dominate Section Play, Now 12-0
The Pioneer golfers ran their record to 12-0 with another run-away performance last Tuesday at Meadia Heights Golf Club. Matt Wilson fired a 78, the second lowest score of the day, with brother Ben one stroke behind. Gehrig Harsh added an 80 and Morgan Smith's 84 was next, leaving L-S with a 321 total, a whopping 38 strokes ahead of second place Cocalico (359). Elco (398), N. Lebanon (404) and Octorara (408) round out Section Two competition.
FOOTBALL
After a week one loss to Warwick, Lampeter-Strasburg's football team regrouped and recorded a 31-0 shutout over visiting Penn Manor on Sept. 3. The win was Lampeter's seventh straight over the Comets and third straight shutout.
After a scoreless first quarter, L-S finally hit their stride, scoring twice in the second, and they never looked back. Jonathan Mellinger scored on a one-yard run with 6:12 left in the half and QB Berkeley Wagner added a 49-yard score just over five minutes later.
A balanced attack saw Payton Cunningham reach the endzone in the third frame while Giovanni Malatesta added the final TD with 6:01 remaining. Andrew Reidenbaugh, who capped the scoring with a 21-yard field goal, went 4-for-4 in PAT's.
"I thought we came together and played complimentary football," said head coach Victor Ridenour who took over for John Manion (23 years).
Wagner and Malatesta combined for 158 of Lampeter's 209 rushing yards. Dante Gilot and Beau Heyser each hauled in a pair of passes and Luke Hines recorded a team high five solo tackles.
"We did have a number of penalties but if we tweak our technique those should clean up a bit," Ridenour added. "This was an unselfish effort by all that contributed to the win. The kids truly only care about the end result."
BOYS' SOCCER
The Pioneers hosted Penn Manor in their season opener Sept. 3 but came out on the wrong side of a 3-0 result. Despite a 1-0 halftime deficit, L-S gave up a pair of second half goals in the non-league contest.
In the league opener last Tuesday night in Elizabethtown, the Bears pulled away from a 1-1 first half tie with a pair of second half tallies to win 3-2.
Andrew Reidenbaugh's first half header goal put L-S on the board while Dan Marcroft's goal after the break knotted the score again. But it was E-town with the last say, scoring the game winner minutes into OT.
"It was a tough game for both teams and a great section matchup," said Etown boss Jim Sostack.
TENNIS
The Pioneers, the defending Section Two champs, improved to 2-2 with a 5-2 win over Penn Manor on Sept. 2. Lindsey Steele and Katie Finn, at No. 2 doubles, and Maddie Snyder and Jess Salgado, playing No. 3, both won 8-1 to put L-S on the board.
Katie Platt, Steele and Finn, playing No. 2 through 4 singles, extended the advantage with straight set wins.
Last Tuesday, against visiting Donegal, the girls improved to 4-1 with a 6-1 victory over the Indians. Ryan and Kylie Gerhardt opened doubles action with an 8-2 win while Laura Leaman and Platt and Steel and Finn both recorded 8-3 wins.
The Gerhardt's claimed the top two singles matches in straight sets while Platt did the same at No. 4.
GIRLS' SOCCER
The Lady Pioneers enter the 2021 season with eight seniors, including Section 2 MVP Jenna Daveler, first team all-star keeper Maggie Johnson and second team all-star Maggie Johnson.
But in their opener on Sept. 3, the hosting Comets had the better hand. After a scoreless first half, L-S broke in front with a goal by Sophie Rhodes, assisted by freshman Chloe Bucher, but Penn Manor responded with a pair of goals over the final 20 minutes.
In the league opener last Tuesday night, the Pioneers took care of business early, scoring three times in the first half en route to a 4-2 win over visiting Elizabethtown.
Molly Bucher sparked the scoring with a pair of first half tallies. Ashlyn Keys also scored in that first half while Daveler, who dished out a pair of assists, recorded Lampeter's second half goal. Madison Weichler was also credited with an assist.
FIELD HOCKEY
After suffering a 5-0 loss to Penn Manor in last year's League Championship game, the Pioneers were looking for redemption in their league opener in Millersville Sept. 3. And they almost got it. Tori Heiserman's first half goal boosted Lampeter's confidence but Manor's second half score with 8:40 left evened the playing field and switched the momentum to the home team. The Comets, who dominated the stats with advantages in shots (18-4) and corners (11-4) pulled out the win with an overtime goal by Isabelle Thatcher.
"That early goal on a perfect corner was a huge moment," said head coach Katrina Swarr, "but we struggled in the second and third quarter. And we had not practiced overtime!
"Brooke Zuber had an outstanding game, and our three backs (Breigh Bauer, Maggie Swarr and Kara Scranton) were more than solid," she continued.
CROSS COUNTRY
At Lancaster Mennonite last Tuesday, the Pioneer harriers ran past the Blazers and Lancaster Catholic without breaking a sweat. Well almost. The boys earned the first six places and picked up a pair of shutout wins. Colin Whitaker (17:08), Parker Stoner (17:24), Ben Devine (17:39), Adrian Elia (18:04), Luka Vranich (18:15) and David Pritchard (18:30) led the way as L-S looks to claim a fourth straight Section Two title. Luke Smith also finished in the top ten, placing ninth in 19:03.
The girls were almost as impressive, earning 10 of the top 15 places for a shutout over the Blazers and a 25-34 win over Lancaster Catholic.
Jaclyn Martin's (22:11) second place finish led the pace. Aubrey Magagna (24:08) and Molly Wissler (24:27) were 5th and 6th respectively while Keira Smecker, Jocelyn Wolff, Victoria Smith, Abby Welchans, Morgan Wright and Hollyn Miller placed 8th through 13th with Selah Drouillard settling in at 15th.
