Nissley Earns PIAA Eighth Place Medal
Donegal senior Zachery Nissley represented the Indians all the way to the PIAA State tournament on May 29th at Shippensburg University, where he grabbed an eighth-place medal for his 160-4 throw in javelin.
"It's been an awesome end to the season for Zach. I think the key to his success these past couple weeks has been consistency," pointed out his coach Bryce Sadler.
The track athlete had already picked up a fifth place in javelin on May 22nd in the District III championships as well as an eighth-place finish in shot put. The prior week, Nissley had added a pair of fourth place medals to his hardware collection representing his efforts in shot and javelin at the L-L Championship meet.
"He and I know what he is capable of, and he's been able to come out the past three weekends and throw consistently close to his PR of 169. To do that when the pressure is on is not easy to do," Sadler added. "Zach showed up each week, executed, and earned his medals. We are so proud of him for the way he stepped up and did what he came to do."
SOFTBALL
Donegal softball closed out their season after a 7-3 loss to South Western in the PIAA District III consolation semifinals on June 1st. The Lady Indians were bumped into the consolation bracket after a 10-0 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg on May 27th in the quarterfinal round.
Donegal had held a 3-2 lead over South Western in the fifth inning after Cara Biesecker and Bella Mackison capitalized on errors and scored Biesecker as the go-ahead, but South Western retaliated with a five-run surge in the bottom of the fifth to pull away for good.
Mackison drove in the earlier two Donegal runs with a double in the third to score Biesecker and Aysha Gibbs. The Indians had one additional hit in the loss, supplied by Emma Garber.
The district tournament journey concludes a 16-5 overall season that featured the Lady Indians claiming the L-L Section III Title in their 15-3 regular season schedule.
